okay, here comes the rant.
no one who buys that knife does so for the sake of practicality. in fact, most infi blades are not practical, economically speaking. if you need a chopper and need to watch the weight, the RTAK2 is lighter, cheaper, and holds it edge magnificently (better than my Carbon V LTC kukri and DFLE). another great choice that you don't have to worry too much about is a machete. tram, ontario, barteaux, condor, cold steel, take your pick.
buy the NMFBM, not because it's practical, but because you want it and can afford it.

The NMFBM is a huge heavy chopper. It is not Infantry friendly. Of course, if you go Armor, it would be just fine for chopping limbs and such for camo, since you can carry it in the bustle rack on the back of the turret. I sure wouldn't want to carry it on my person for any length of time.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

There's nothing wrong with that. However, I was addressing the practicality of taking that knife to Iraq. It's not a practical knife to take to Iraq in my opinion. The simple reality is that he most likely will not need a chopper or a machette in the sandy, dry, desert climate, or urban landscape that he's likely to find himself in. A smaller blade 5-6 inch will be more practical, lighter, and will be used more than some massive chopper. The battlefield is about what works and what doesn't. And I don't think that particular blade is the best choice. It's one thing to want a knife simply to want one. Heck, I've got plenty of those lying around. However, it's quite another thing when you have to choose based on the situation.

We may be some place else by the time recon seed gets deployed. Maybe a place with trees.

Someone on BF said the Navy inspector going over his kit almost confiscated his FBM because it was a "machete" style blade and they don't allow soldiers to bring machetes back from the sand box. The NMFBM is even BIGGER then the FBM. I would hate to see you spend that dough on a NMFBM then lose it on your first deployment to some Navy NCO. Most soldiers carry something like the Gerber LMF or a Cold Steel recon tanto. Your Scrapper6 and a multitool are all you need bro. Unless you will be regularly batoning through steel gurders the s6 is a better knife for a soldier then a ash-1. The s6 also provides insulation from heat and electricity. Very well stated. I love my S6. Now the Yard needs to run one of these and I wont be lurking over on the Busse site, lusting over this new big busse chopper.

Maybe a place with trees. ...while this is true, im pretty sure that this might be OK with me! December 2009, at the very earliest and by a long shot, would be the soonest I will arrive to my unit. Then, only if THAT unit were in line to get deployed would I be going anywhere.

Not really, but jumping out of airplanes looks like fun and I love to be in the back woods for long amounts of time so something that involves both of those would be nice. I know I don't want to get stuck in an urban area or with armor.
