Andy, your question got me thinking. I haven’t actually tried this, so I can’t recommend it. It is something I intend to try. Everybody is concerned about rust preventatives that are safe to have on a knife that you use preparing food. The standard answer is mineral oil. Mineral oil may not poison you, but it’s nothing I’d recommend taking internally. After all, mineral oil is a petroleum distillate.

Since I have continuing problems with my DMDC rusting, I’m going to try using beeswax. Not Burt’s beeswax, not fancy-with-additions beeswax. Just beeswax. The sort of plain beeswax they sell in blocks at fabric stores for waxing thread. It may or may not actually work to inhibit rust. That awaits testing. The potential advantage is, for the life of me I can’t see how a layer of beeswax on a knife would be a problem if I’m making a salad.

The rust preventor I use is Vasaline Petrolium Jelly.....I am sure you should be able to get this in the States....it is non toxic and spread fairly thickly stops the air getting to the blade to create rust. All knives can be used without a wipe off if need be and no dodgy stomaches like mineral oil can create. It is good for a load of other uses to....heat rash...chapped lips...sore eyes....blister hot spots....great for a First Aid kit.

I live on the Gulf coast and for years I have been using Corrosion X. Rods, reels, knives, guns, anything that will corrode or rust. Works for me.

Hmmm, I surprised no one mentioned it, Vegetable oil. I use this on my older kitchen knives that aren't stainless, and as yet, I haven't seen any rust or increase in the patina on the blade. Very food safe! LOL!

Lately, after I reprofile an edge for somebody, I coat the edge with Vaseline before shipping. It provides a good barrier against moisture, and as you say, it is non-toxic as well. Last year when a bunch of bug bites on my arms became infected, my doctor told me to clean them with hydogen peroxide and coat them with vaseline. That actually worked much better than the expensive anti-biotic ointment I had been using, and they healed right up. Good stuff.
