Alot of the people I know just get gloves from WalMart, cheap gardening gloves, or the fingerless one's I use. Rapping is one thing to have gloves for, but in the skinnier canyons the sandstone will tear you up, so with all the contact in there it is very nice to have gloves. I know quite a few people that do not use gloves at all rapping, friction is the key. When I first started canyoneering I never used gloves, but back then we were rapping on 10mm+ rope, now a day's 8mm, 9mm rope.
