Those flashlights always cause interesting situations. I carried a AA Mag Lite on a plane once pre 911 and my bag and the Mag Lite had to be inspected. They let me carry it though, I wonder what they'd do now.

I have had my Fenix P3D in my pocket or bag on several flights last year. No issues.

I wonder at times if they do a lot of the scanning by xray machine. Then if something doesn't look right or they can't get a good view they open them up.

I have brought a knife or two up from the states and there isn't a pattern that I have seen.

I had thought of the X-ray machine answer, but then I thought about the outline of the two SYK knives, with nothing but paper for surrounding packaging, and then the other two (much more menacing and fearsome looking in comparison to the SYK ones) knives, and it didn't add up.

I think it's something along the line of what Bramel suggested, they skip a bunch, and if something grabs their attention, they open it up. I know they "played" with the BDLE, because it was littered with fingerprints on the blade, and I can't imagine Dan sending anyone a knife all smudged up like that. You think maybe there's a "closet Dawg", working in Customs?

Oh God, now none of our knives will come to us without being broken in by this mysterious knife nut first!

Well, maybe it's good that someone in Customs appreciates great blades but is honest enough to send them along.

That is funny. I am always weary of what to put on those customs forms. To me, a package that says the contents are "knife" has STEAL ME written all over it

Ah, but it helps when you know that it is completely legal to bring that knife into the country. The rules for bringing a knife/sword/edged implement in Canada:

1) It cannot be a balisong, A.K.A. Butterfly knife
2) It cannot be spring assisted blade, A.K.A. Switchblade
3) It cannot be a punch dagger in any form whatsoever
4) It cannot have a handle which has "brass knuckles", enclosing each
individual finger
5) It cannot measure longer than 1 meter in length, handle and blade complete.

If you try to bring anything into Canada that breaks one or all of these 5 rules, and is not a cheap knockoff replica (like those Lord of the Rings or fantasy blade wall hangers), it is up for review and possible seizure. I have the book here somewhere about bringing stuff into Canada, but these give you the general idea.
