There is a spring loaded adjustment on the rear pulley. You just pull it forward to release tension on the belt and it comes right off.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Thanks Vic. i have to clear out my garage to make room for my own little workshop. I also need to go to some yard sales/flea market to find a sturdy table to work on, but I don't know what height table to get. When you guys work on the sander, do you like the knife closer to your thighs, abs, or chest? I guess the closer it is to your chest, the more control, but also your arms get more fatigue. Is it just personal preference or is there a standard rule of thumb? edit: I forgot about this video, I've heard from some people that this a good video to learn from. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLjFjT4vYsM

I like to grind with arms at approximately stomach height or 90degrees to my torso.

Thanks Ban, time to shop for a table.
I'm getting excited about this! I haven't ordered the HF sander yet, but I will soon. I can't wait to start grinding my own stuff. I'll practice with a ton of old kitchen knives first, then move on to one of my knives, probably the BLH Tiger Knapp because, it's soft, high carbon, and pretty cheap. It is a hollow grind with almost a convex edge, I just have to smooth out the shoulders. After that, maybe I'll move on to something bigger like my RAT-3.

I agree with Ban on the height, but any height will seem awkward at first. You'll just have to see what suits you best.
I got most of the belts at Home Depot - the three belt muli-pass - er... pack.
For less than $5 a pack, they're not too bad for stock removal/reprofiling. For sharpening/honing an existing edge, though, I'd look for some finer grit belts. I found the 4000 and 8000 grit on e**y.c*m. I got ten of each from there. I think the seller calls herself the sandpaper lady.

I am always looking for better prices on sanding belts. I think Pop's Knife Supply has some good prices. My Delta came in today. I haven't finished putting all of it together yet. Man this thing is heavy! It dwarfs my old one from HF. ![[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]](http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w64/rivershaman/Delta002.jpg) I put a nice edge on a new Tram with it, just to check it out. It runs cooler and removes stock faster. It is smooth, too, unlike the POS from Chipping Away. ![[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]](http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w64/rivershaman/Delta004.jpg)
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Nice setup Vic, looking forward to seeing more great stuff coming from you.
I think I've decided to get the SA180 if it goes on sale for $90 shipped again. The price keeps changing, so I think it shouldn't be too long until the deal comes again.

MRpink, your inbox is full. Here's the skinny on the orange belts: I got the belts from here . Just do a site search for sanding belt or the item numbers below. I order directly from their site. The 1"x30" belts I use are item #4168A61, but they aren't showing a 1"x42" size in the ceramic Al oxide belts (It might take a telephone call to ask as it just might not be listed on the site). The zirconia alumina belts are supposed to be good too, but I haven't used them. The zirconia alumina 1"x42" belts are items #4714A16, 4714A15, 4714A14, 4714A13, 4714A12, 4714A11. -mike

Nice setup Vic, looking forward to seeing more great stuff coming from you.... Actually, leaving them dull or "combat" sharp seems to be the thing. They are designed to be that way, apparently. And as long as some manufacturers continue selling knives with obtuse, dull edges, I will have plenty of work sharpening knives for those poor misguided souls who don't drink enough to know that knives should be left dull and are not intended for cutting.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

HD, I love your commentary! I am a newbie at this game and I figured out that to get my blades looking and cutting as nicely as yours meant that I'm going to have to invest in a belt sander. And it arrived today! Pics to come later, although they won't be nearly as graphic as yours.
