Each digit has 2 possibilities, 0 or 1. When you reach the highest value a given digit can hold, you reset it to 0 and increment the next digit. What I wrote uses a base-3 number system. The counting numbers in base-3 are 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, 20, 21, 22, 100, 101, etc.
