and most of the other kniver are around .275-.280.i wonder why they decided to make a big knife thinner? wouldnt a thicker knife be more durable? i was just wondering because they have made mostly thicker knives.

From what I understand a thicker knife is not always better. For chopping and similar tasks, maybe a thicker knife would have an advantage because it would be heavier; but the amount of chopping ability a blade has kind of depends on the edge geometry too. A thick knife with an obtuse edge will not chop as good as a thinner knife with a more acute edge. Put it this way, the SOD will be plenty strong and I have no problem with it being 1/4" thick. There ain't much to gain except extra weight by adding more steel. The SOD is going to be a beast!!!

Quarter inch is pretty darn serious. The Dogfather is 0.25", and 15 inches overall length. If I baton it into a big chunk of wood and lean sideways on the handle, I can make the blade flex a little bit but that's it.
To actually break a quarter inch slab of SR77 steel is, I believe, beyond unaided human strength. You would have to try very hard to break a Scrapyard knife. Which is kind of the point. So don't worry about it.

I am pretty sure they use .250 thk stock and if the other knives were thicker it was because of the coating, also keep in mind the other blades that you are referring to have a saber grind on them and the grind doesnt start at the top of the spine, these are full flat grind and the grind goes all the way to the spine. Material thicknesses also carry a tolerance to them and not all are exactly .250 thick

SR-77 is extremely tough and .25 inch is a good size. Old Busse kin knives are generally fatties and the trend seems to be less thick these days, which I think is more practical.
Have you seen the pictures of the DFCG destruction test? The SOD is going to be stout and TOUGH.

.250 is thick enough. Wouldn't want it any thicker.

That said we have no idea what the SODs are going to mic out at.

Okay, here is the easiest way I can think to explain this, if you have a saber ground blade (on the right) the top of the spine is not machined down so it will be the stock thickness with tolerance and if you add coating it will be thicker than .250 naturally. If you have a full height flat grind than the entire blade is machined and the top of the spine will be slightly thinner than the .250 stock thickness. If you look at a full height flat ground blade that is full exposed tang you will see a difference in the thickness from the tang to the blade where the blade is machined down.
