Well, I would suggest a vacation there first. Like Northern Minnesota, it's a great place to visit when the weather cooperates, but awfully rough when it doesn't!

GF - I wanted to make my 1000th post as a reply to one of yours. Thanks for the help! Now, let's get you here as well.

You are so right. We lived in Minneapolis and I went hunting in Northern MN and got caught in a blinding snow storm with the following days reporting -40 degrees.

I have to believe that Alaska is much worse on the weather front. But it has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth from what I have seen in photos. Some day I will get there.

When I was a kid I worked in a cold store for a few months and that was only -25 (C not F). -40 with a wind chill would HURT.

Dan - I believe it was the winter of 1976 when the temperature did not rise above -20 below for 10 straight days and nights. It was the coldest I have ever been for so long! Minnesota is beautiful for about 3 seasons, then head South!

My wife's uncle who lives in Anchorage says that MANY Alaska residents winterize their places, then head for warmer areas like Washington, Oregon, and down to Arizona. Alaska is BEAUTIFUL when you can be warm enough to really enjoy it, but that nice season is really short!

Thank god for the gulf stream otherwise good old Blighty would be Canada cold in winter(nightmare!). Mind you proper winters would be a good excuse to buy a 4x4!

Well Paul, I have a 4X4, but I will GLADLY forego the extremely cold and snowy weather for what I have here.

My problem is justifying a car that does 30 mpg with diesel here at about 95pence a litre.. (about $1!) Big thirsty cars are a bit of a no-no over here unless you are stupidly well paid!

The same problem exists in a lot of countrys; it really breaks the budget unless you are well off or fueling at the government's expense. I have really cut back on my driving, but of course I plan on spending the savings on Scrap Yard blades!
