i have a left and right hand rem 1187's that i have made adapters for that hold them together. i also specially built an adapter that bolts both recievers to one stock.also built a mecanism to fire both triggers at once ala a winter trigger device. i have the guns loaded with 00 and can put 64 .36 cal balls thru the tubes in about 5 seconds.

I'd have to vote for the shotgun as well. Preferably with a short (18 inch) barrel. 20 gauge delivers more than enough lead to put down a human at indoor ranges, so "more power" is not a good reason to go to 12 if that's all this thing will be doing. #3 and #4 buckshot will do the job, and do not present the same problems as #00, each pellet of which has the same energy as a light caliber bullet and will readily go through a couple walls. At 5 yards or less, "retained energy" is not something you need to worry about with the lighter buckshot.

Be aware that with a shotgun, a hit to the torso is almost certainly fatal. No firearm should be discharged as a warning or to "just wound" your target, but consider that the majority of people shot with handguns survive thanks to quick hospitalization. Where that figures into your decisions is up to you.

I'm glad the conversation went to 12-20 gauge.I've been looking at the Mossberg 500 and my little 110 lb wife wondering if she could handle a 12 gauge...I would rather have the 12, but figure what's the point if she can't manage it!

There's also a flashight in both night stands, a cell phone, and a Cold Steel Kukhri machete (the SOD is on my side ), and I keep a spare Glock 23 and a couple mags in my nightstand too, because "you never know"...

My first choice would be a short-barreled 12 gauge shotgun with #4 buckshot, which my wife has on her side of the bed. I have an 870 Remington Express Magnum on my side, with #4s and Centurion duplex loads(6 #1 buckshot and 1 .65 cal. ball). I don't worry about over-penetration, just the cause of the problem.
Wow- you guys even have your wife ready to " lock n load " !! I picture this dude breaking in- and then gets blasted by some little gal about five foot nothin I love it

Well, who's to say that some crackhead doesn't smash in your door while you are on the "throne" or in the shower?!? I want my wife ready to handle things until I respond - most likely with the 9mm I keep in our master bathroom.

I have lots of guns. My favorite for home protection is an inexpensive Mossberg 20 ga with a pistol grip.

this ? is answered by ONE answer and one only.

a 12 gauge shotgun. PERIOD. end of story. that is the best home defense weapon ever. this isnt arguable.

now, whatever you want to use is subject to debate. personally, i live in an apt complex. i keep my Glock 26 (best 9mm on the market IMO as i have owned every glock 9mm model - the 17 and 19) with me where ever i am and i have access to over 50 rounds at all times in the house. 15 rounds of 147gr HP rounds will stop anything and anyone. I dont care who you are.

... and personally, the best shotgun ever built is the Remington Model 870. this and the mossberg 500 have seen more action and been around longer than any others. benelli makes great weapons but they aint a remington 870.

+1 I never even thought about prepping the bathroom. Instant image of Vincent Vega just popped up.
