Exactly. The statement was made, "SR77 doesn't get brittle in the cold. At all." Which is what I was saying was silly. ALL steel gets brittle. At least all I know of. It's just that at -40C, SR77's brittleness may not be significantly increased to the point where it's anything to worry about. I was just trying to suppress an exaggeration. I'd still be leery of batoning hard, frozen wood at -40C.

Sometimes I think it would be cool to have a reindeer fur coat like the northern Europeans use/d. But they cost a crazy amount, and I don't know anything about how long they last. So.

(For our climate, a beaver fur mantle would be more useful anyway; beaver fur is amazing stuff, if you ever get a chance to handle some)

By "better" I'm going to assume that you mean in terms of insulation per thickness/bulk, and the answer is that I don't know. Both types of fur are extremely effective, which is obvious when you look at how the respective creatures live their lives.

Seriously coldone, have you ever seen your lawn? Does one exist? How do you get anything through pipes (Water/sewer/whatever) without it freezing?

Good point-I was just wondering if you ever tried any of the furs- or knew someone who did ? I guess by " better" I meant" just as warm" or perhaps even " Warmer " ? Good perspective on how they live- just interesed if it would help us more " human " types

I've never had a fur garment, though I have handled beaver pelts and have a first hand appreciation for how well those fellows are dressed. Mother sometimes buys old fur coats and makes teddy bears from them, and I've had a chance to handle a few other types of furs like mink, squirrel, fox, etc; and nothing comes close to the beaver as far as something I'd actually wear for protection from the elements. As far as the reindeer, I'm not basing that on anything other than widespread "common knowledge" that it's very very warm and has been used for thousands of years by native peoples in the far north.

The house has a bleeder on the water line which runs a continual stream into the sewage line. It is only a trickle, but it keeps things from freezing up!

I do have a lawn! Whether there is grass down there is open for debate though.

Well Chris, at least you don't have to mow the lawn as often as I do!

I think I'd prefer mowing the lawn to shoveling snow in below freezing temp.
