I love my new SOD LE. I was wondering why the choil was designed the way it was. It seems widened for some reason. I know that some were put off by it as taking more of the cutting edge than was necessary. I dont find it to be an issue though given my perception of the purpose of the knife.

I like it too, I compare it to the CT choil and I actually have more to hold on to with the SOD compare to the CT.

glad a thread was started cause there does seem to be a bit o talk about the SOD choil. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

i havent gotten mine yet so i cant say exactly, but from the looks of it id say i feel pretty neutral about it.

i always have a small knife for fine work so choking up on a big knife isnt something id normally do.

as far as loosing 3/4" of edge, i guess if you really NEED to baton a certain size of wood youd be out of luck but im sure if you keep turning the log youll find a piece you can split off.

Actually, I find having the choil a very useful thing.

With the SOD being a bit blade heavy, if I need to do
something that requires more of a balanced blade, the
ability to move my hand further up the blade for better
balance is nice.

Of course I do like mcjh does and have a secondary knife
with me at all times, that is smaller and better able to
accomplish tasks suited to a small blade. However, in
the event that I find myself with only one blade available
to me, I do like the option of being able to choke up on
the blade in case I only have the one knife available to me.

Just my opinion tho.

Cheers <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Ah yes . . . the perennial choil thread. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

This is an oft discussed topic. Some people like choils, some people hate choils. I'm pretty neutral when it comes to choils. But I can tell you why the SoD has a large choil. The answer is that the choil (as well as the blade shape and the thumb ramp) were patterned after the Dog Father. Hence the name, Son of Dogfather. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I've made an observation about the thumb ramp. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/loopy.gif" alt="" />

When I'm handling the knife by the handle, as opposed to choking up on the blade,
I don't use for the thumb ramp. When I'm choking up on the blade using the choil,
it appears to me that the thumb ramp is too far back to be of much use.

Anyone else see this, or am I just off in my little world <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this knife <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Cheers <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Shhhh. Don't tell anybody. But the first thing I'd do if I had a SoD is grind off the thumb ramp. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/paperbag.gif" alt="" />

OMG, then that would make it a.......Camp Tramp <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

I heard that!!

I don't particularly care for the ramp, but I don't hate it either. If you hate it, mod the blade. I read a while back on the Himalayan Imports subforum of BladeForums where several guys were giving grief to another for moding the grips of his khuk. Granted, it had been decoratively carved, but it was too thick for him so he sanded it. Folks said that he defaced the kami's art, but I felt that since he bought it and it didn't feel comfortable to him, then he should feel free to mod it -- if they don't like it, tough, it's not theirs. That mod was one reason I got a good deal on the D-guard when he sold it, and I agree that as thick as the handle still is, it would have been uncomfortable for me too.
