Thank you for sharing the pics. Sure does make it hard to look out the window at all this ice.

We sprayed 90 acres to get rid of the cactus now that I think of it. Invasive species as is the mesquite.

Andy - thanks for those other shots of yours. I guess since we just don't have native cacti around these parts that they tend to look really cool to me. I did notice that the cacti were most prolific around the road margins in the scrub, apparently this species really likes disturbance and that is a classic trait of an invasive!

Gambit, have you ever been to San Miguel? I went to school there for awhile(Academia de San Miguel de Allende, how original right). There are some great places to eat, drink and drink some more. If you haven't been I can tell you a few places I liked.

imaginefj' No I have never been, I hear it is quite spectacular. I think we will catch the end of the flower market? We have some friends that own a home there to entertain us but if you got suggestions I'll look into them. Much appreciatted.

I have a friend who has a vacation home there as well although I have never seen it.
Botanical Gardens are supposed to be neat, and they might be but it looked like alot of the Texas ranch land to me.
The Momma Mias comes to mind, and is fairly nice for food and drinks. Great live music.
Limericks is a nice "Irish" pub and had a particular beer that was always a better deal but never a great deal.
You need to go to El Gato Negro. The oldest cantina in San Miguel, maybe the dirtiest too. It was a door or two down from my school so I spent alot of time there.
Poncho and Leftys was kind of commercial but we did get VIP treatment for bringing white girls. It sounds bad but it was/is the truth.
Casa Pagio sp? was a great steak house and provided some much need calories and quite.
All of these places are close to the central church or Parroquia. Most of the "nice" stuff is in this area IMHO. It is filled with non-Mexicans.
There is one place that the name escapes me but your friends should know that overlooks the city and has good food.
Sadly, and again, maybe not the first place I would go would be El Gato Negro.
Watch the cab drivers, they are pushy, negotiate the fee before hand and stick with it. The roads are "cobble stone" translate to very very rough.
More to come.

There is a coffee table book called "Doors of San Miguel" that is really neat. Great photos of well, doors. The church/Parroquia is neat but can't compare with those of Europe. The Europeans had a head start though right. I sat in there a few times to collect my thoughts.
Oddly, I remember the way it all smells, the whole country, the state of Guanajuato, El Gato Negro.
OH! You have seen Desperado with Antonio Banderas? It was filmed in Acuna, which I have spent entirely too much time in. Well the sequel, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, was filmed in San Miguel. It gives you some cool things to look at and you can eat where Depp ate if you are so inclined.
Depp apparently loved SM and stayed there an extra month. There was a big picture of him in Poncho and Leftys.
