Best handle mod I have seen was , if my memory serves me well, done by knifemaker Scott Gossman on someones Swamprat M6. It was an awesome wooden handle if anyone can find the pics. Only problem was that he also convexed the blade down and left it a little too thin for tough work and during a knife test it deformed quite badly !!!!

I am pretty sure I remember seeing the knife you are referring to posted over on Bladeforums.
If we are talking about the same knife, I thought I remember the edge chipping out with a pretty significant chip. - One of the VERY few SR-101 blades I ever saw take any significant damage. *** BUT, it was likely due to the regrinding causing temper damage (?????).

I searched, but cannot find it anymore on bladeforums.

It was shown in a chop-off along with a bunch of choppers. I can't remember who did the chop-off, but the chop-off was pretty controlled on 2"x4" or 2"x6" boards or something.

If I remember correctly, the M6 had been (as you said) significantly customized and included a significant regrinding of the blades edge.

I "believe" (if I remember correctly) the knife was sent back to Eric/Swamp Rat. And in spite of it being determined that temper damage had most likely been done to the edge when it was reground, Eric/Swamp Rat/Busse still covered the knife under warranty.

I thought so.

I google searched Bladeforums.com specifically, searched Swamp Rat/Rat Chat as I thought I had seen it mentioned there. I even searched a coupld of differet picture hosting sites, but that was a hassle and no luck.

I am surprised I didn't save the pics to my files. I often do save unique pics to my files.

For some reason, I keep thinking it may have been River-8 who did that chop-off????

Yeah... River-8 has been around for a long time. I have actually exchanged some emails with him about some SAR designs in the past. His name is John.

I don't want to post too much about our SAR ideas, thoughts and attempts..... But, I will just say that River-8 (ended up) taking his SAR concept to Bill Siegle and had Bill make what turned out to be a VERY nice knife. ... I want one.

[Linked Image from i80.photobucket.com]

My understanding is that Bill is tweaking a 3rd version (??????) That along with some other knives I want from some makers I don't follow as much like a couple of Koster knives, some NWA knives, and some others that I haven't been able to just plunk down cash for .... ... yet.

I actually see River-8 on Bladeforums/Busse-forums more than Rat Chat.... Used to be different.... but, Rat Chat isn't nearly as active as it used to be a few years ago. .... However, we didn't have the Scrap Yard forum then either.... so it (sort of) works out I guess. But, many of the old Rat Chat guys don't come here. Some post on Busse forums, some just aren't around as much anymore.

KG, isn't it a shame that many have not made it over here. Honestly, I was a bit of a hold out and didn't come over here till recently but am so glad I did. After reading River8s post about that knife at the Swamp I contacted Bill and he said something to the effect of working on another version before making them available to me/public. We discussed the throwing of the knife which he said was gross abuse.

I'm not a big knife thrower but the Busse warranty is a major selling point for me.

I actually held out for a few weeks without checking out Scrap Yard or the forum when it first opened. I hate having to open new accounts and such. But, I eventually did and the activity quickly swung to the Yard from the Swamp.

Unfortunate to see that many didn't come over or did, but don't come back much at all.

I miss Trumby's posts, Warren, Xaman and some others.

But, we did pick up a bunch of great new guys here.

I tend to have to agree that throwing knives is abusive and can be VERY hard on knives.

I think Bill often uses 5160 which is PLENTY strong for throwing and one of the tougher steels behind INFI and SR-77. I would assume 5160 is generally tougher than 52100 at similar hardness. However, if a tip or edge is ground thin enough to function well as a cutting utinsil, then even with tough steel, those thin areas are prone to severe deformation or even breaking.

Busse has a great warranty and INFI and SR-77 are UBER tough. But, even those could break if you were thinned out for good cutting. I have seen INFI break. But, I think SR-77 us much more prone to roll or deform before breaking.

But, actually, the most common failure caused by throwing knives is handle damage and handle seperation from the scales.

I don't know how Bill attaches his scales.

Still, aside from possible handle damage or minor tip damage, I seriously doubt that SAR knife in 5160 would have any other significant failures from throwing. It looks quite stout and made of tough steel.

I am not an expert on Bill's knives, but I do know he makes some impressive chopper designs that others have raved about. Also, I have seen on multiple occassions where Bill will go out and hard use his own knives. So, I am reasonably confident Bill makes and understands tough knives.

While 5160 is quite tough, I would rather have that knife in INFI, 3V, A2, SR-101 or a few other options.

Eventually...for sure! Been wanting to do it for a while, but it has to take a back seat to other projects and orders right now...
