If you want to learn how to configure your gear properly you need to watch SF soldiers that have "been there, done that" so to speak. I have helped cut wounded soldiers out of some seriously convoluted gear configurations. You find one thing in common at the bottom of those vest/jacket set ups with everything available from Blackhawk, Battlelab, TAD Gear, etc. etc. clipped to them, and that is usually a scared youngster who is now bleeding profusely and wondering what just happened.

Sorry guys, didn't mean to hijack the thread, the gear thing is a sore subject with me.

I agree...most of these guys are from our elite regiments ( not S/F ) although they are young and fresh from passing out...but having done their selection cadre where they get bollocked for not putting the plates in...incase they find it too easy...you now have to convince them that "less" is sometimes "more" when it comes to "effectiveness"...old boys like me who still use belt webbing seem old hat to some...but as I tell them...at least we got to be "old"...and no-one asked my opinion when they designed a "michelin man" set of equipment...I keep saying it is better to be unobserved than try to make yourself bullet and shrapnel proof...it's just an illusion. Anyway...so far they all listen and learn...but the flak I get from above...sh!t...it's me that needs the jacket!!

Steel Fan, you're preachin to the chior brother! I'm only 37 years old, but if consider the places I've been and the things I've been through, believe me, I'm old! I am very much set in my ways, and not because I am stubborn, but because I know what works and what doesn't.

By the way, it's always better to NOT be seen

Leather is almost always my first choice, and if made and treated right will do just fine in almost any conditions. And leather can be made with a lot more creativity too.

However kydex works too and has it's advantages at times. A lot of my blades spend more time in kydex because I'm too busy making leather for everyone else... But ultimately whenever possible I eventually make leather for my favorite users. The one exception is my EDC Bad Warden necker, kydex seems to work better for me there.
Jeff that AK sheath of yours that was posted on Bladeforums to day is a work of art. Unbelievable!
