PS: When it comes to the S5, color me lemming!

.... don't get me wrong Bruce. Square choil and larger than I prefer guard or not, I will likely be looking for a way to find money to buy an S5.

I am still confident the S5 is a GREAT design that has a LOT going for it .... even if it has a flaw or two.

HOWEVER, I am confident, if I get the S5 with a square choil and over-sized guard, I will be wishing it were a rounded choil with a smaller guard.

Further, I am Confident that I might look to buy more than one if the choil/guard were improved. (*** Price dependant of course. )

IMO, on this knife, the choil/guard design is a VERY relevant factor/feature.

Also, based on the resounding preferences stated by many Dogs, I am VERY confident that if the choil/guard improvements are made, in spite of "Brand specific styling - whatever...", that the S5 WOULD/WILL sell better if the improvements are made.

And I am CERTAIN, while I contend there is no ONE perfect knife and many people will always prefer different things and variety will always keep us looking for the next thing, that making those choil improvements to the S5 would make the S5 pretty DARN hard to find fault in and ARGUABLY a PERFECT classic Busse and kin knife for the record books!

As far as sales and marketing is concerned, normal rules do not apply here. This is Busse Country, and Busse rules apply here. While I believe Dan and Jerry listen to our desires to a certain extent, I suspect they tend to build what pleases them. If what pleases them pleases us, and it usually does, then fine. If not, knives are summarily withdrawn and Dan & Jerry are off to their next design.

Generally, I have to agree this seems to be how it is done.

And to some degree in "some" cases, I can appreciate this mentallity. I have read enough posts to see certain design desires to be scattered so randomly over the map, that a business might not have much choice but just use their own experience in a design, make it and move on.

However, in some cases, such as this one, where the majority is over-welmingly in favor of making a few minor tweaks.

If making these tweaks, result in a better knife with increased sales that is desired by MORE people, I wouldn't be able to understand NOT conceding to the masses and Bussiness loyalty bases opinions/requests.

But,... again, for all I know, the call has already been made and the design may already be committed to.

I will try "Hoping" anyway.

I would prefer a round choil and no thumb ramp but then it would be a Bog Dog on steroids! Not that there is anything wrong with that.

WOW! You guys are killing me!

Here's a pic of a Bog Dog blade on top of the Scrapper 5 blade. You are literally giving up less than 1/8 of an inch in cutting edge!

So, what's the advantage? You benefit by gaining valuable width at the ricasso where the grind plunge falls. The grind plunge area is the most susceptible to failure during heavy abuse due to the stress risers introduced by the plunges on each side of the blade. The Scrap Yard "squared" choil greatly improves the durability of the blade against catastrophic failure while providing the user with the ability to choke up on the blade for close-up work.

The blade on the Scrapper 5 is .260" wider than the Bog Dog while the plunge line/ricasso width (thumb ramp not included) is .180" wider!

Poor old Bog Dog NEVER had a chance!

The strength argument certainly makes sense, but boy does that Bog Dog choil look more comfortable to choke up on...

Looking at those two sketches, the big choil sure looks sexy. But the small choil just seems more functional.

The smaller choil is far too small to choke-up on unless you have the hands of a 5 year old. Otherwise you'll experience profuse bleeding at the first knuckle on your index finger, AKA your trigger finger! Your odds of scoring a prize buck will be greatly reduced as just prior to every shot you take your screaming like a school girl will echo throughout the forest. LOL

Thanks for posting the picture Dan! I think that answers a lot of questions. I find the round and square choil as equally comfortable. The biggest difference I see is that the choil begins earlier in the Bog Dog, which can help if you have smaller hands and want to choke up. I can choke up fine on my SOD, but if the distance from the end of the handle to the beginning of the choil was closer, it'd be even better. Either way, I can't wait for the S5!!!

Guys, I gotta be honest, I see nothing wrong with the design of this blade.

Obviously, Dan thought it out, and explained his reasons why he shaped it the way he did (He didn't need to, but it was nice of him to do so), and I honestly am happy with the look and potential feel of the S5 of my hands. If you don't like it, then don't buy it.

It just means more S5s are available for me and others to buy.

Personally, I'm hoping to be able to afford to get two LEs and two CGs. They're talking about sending me back over to the sandbox for 2010, and I can't think of a nicer blade to put on my tac vest as an all purpose blade!
