Given all the info so far, I'd suggest two gardens.

One in a sturdy green house or at least well fenced and covered. Another, small one, with whatever they REALLY like planted in it. Ideally in the open, and closer to where they hang out.

Good luck.

I can't afford a green house right now. I may plant some tomatoes. That tree is in BB gun range from my back door.

Are you allowed to use crossbows in your area??? If so, then that could quietly get rid of your problem, if you chose to.

i would plant so tomatos or some potatos and then jsut use a bb gun to keep all of the varmits off of your plants and just out of your yard. a gas powered bb gun would probably do the best.

I have three BB guns. If I want to kill them, my 22s will handle that. I only kill varmints when I have to. I might need them for dinner one day.

As long as I can keep them out of the house, I'm a live and let live kind of guy myself. I've had problems with mice before, but not since neighbors with cats moved in. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any more skinks, which used to live under my bushes, since then either -- they were kind of neat.

I'm told that raccoons can rip through a roof, but if you don't have that problem, they're really rather cute. The only wildlife I can think of that I'd kill on sight are rats, skunks, and porcupines; rats because they're just nasty, skunks because they're a frequent rabies vector and a hazard for dogs, but not as bad as porcupines, which can do severe damage to dogs.

I'm more a "if you mess with my food, you might get eaten yourself" kinda guy. There's a rabbit that keeps getting into my garden, and I'm tempted to set some snares and have me some rabbit stew...

My neighborhood is infested with squirrels, which (as I've discussed before) may have a lot in common with rats, but get a pass because of the bushy tail. There's also a big groundhog that's been digging into a shed a few doors down -- that neighbor keeps trying to block off the entry, but it just digs along side of the concrete blocks to get back in. It's not very neighborly of me, but I cheer for the marment -- I like to watch it -- it's a survivor and not damaging any of my stuff. I see a pair of falcons frequently that must nest somewhere in the neighborhood; I suspect that they help control the squirrels. I've also seen possums, a raccoon, a fox, and even a coyote, which seems strange since I live in the city limits, but before the housing crash, development along the Ohio river pushed some animals got out of their habitat.

Anyway, I wouldn't even try to maintain a garden because of the squirrels, but I can certainly see your point about that rabbit.

That's because squirrels taste like crap. Rabbits are MUCH yummier
