7in seems to be the most popular length for a "camp knife" but lately i've found that i prefer something a bit longer in the 9-10in range like the BR,DFLE,DFCG.

i think the BR is perfect.lighter than the DF's and an inch shorter so hip carry is a bit more comfortable.

The BattleRat was my first Bussekin knife, and it IS a great one!

The knife I actually use the most as a camp knife is my Battle Rat, although it's on the large size for hiking. DogFather, NMSFNO or FSH works here too.

My favorite heavy use hiking knife is the Camp Tramp (SoD works in this slot but I like the SR101 on the Tramp). SFNO works here too.

If I don't want to scare people, the biggest knife that I'm comfortable carrying on my hip is the Desert Jack.

A friend has a CT, and I have the SOD. I think that he and I will need to get a chop-off going and then have a couple cold ones. He claims his Busse Jack Hammer Comp is better chopper than his CT so I might talk him into using that one too.

Sounds like a plan.

RN: Actually it's the Rat Shaker II. My wife bought it for me off ebay over a year ago an paid WAY to much for it, but I was asleep and she knew I wanted it so she got it for me. It's the only Bussekin I've got now, the others were either not what I was looking for or were priced too much for me at the time. Now the S5, I plan on being able to get one of those and enjoying it very much. But I also wish the "choil" wasn't near as big as it appears it will be. Oh well, If they build it, it will be bought.

I held off from replying to this because I tend to see that so many people have a WIDE variety of views on what "Their" view on a "Camp Knife" is and should be.

I am not even sure I can "define" camp knife very well for even my own uses - as even for me, knife preferences are a bit of a moving target with so many options to choose from and as various camp situations change.... As Kenken sort of mentioned/started about different situations:

Quote
walking/hiking/camping far from people all together? I bring the CT. It is around the same size as the SOD and made of SR101 and a tack lighter than the SOD.

car camping? I bring everything ......, bag it and bring it all!

+1 to some degree anyway... I never bring ALL my knives. ... I have too many.

For hiking, the CT is one of my favorites as far as being the largest Camp style knife I prefer to carry. Weight and size are an issue to me when I hike.

* And actually, more often than not, the largest knife I hike with would be the RMD or smaller. And when it comes to knives that are RMD or smaller, I honestly have a HUGE variety of GREAT choices including some Busse and kin options and many non-Busse and kin options.

But, for a larger knife, the CT just give the best bang for the pound performance of all of my knives at the largest size and weight I am generally willing to carry - pretty easily. I had to skip on the SOD since I use my CT so regularly. I am very certain the SOD is a great knife, but with finances being tight, my preference for SR-101, and I prefer the choil and lack of thumb ramp on the CT, I assume I would keep using my CT and just couldn't justify the SOD. If the SOD had been in SR-101 and looked more like the Scrapweiler concept, I would have found a way to buy (probably 2) and it likely would have replaced my CT. .... oh well.

The same happened with my BR vs. DFLE. I REALLY like the DFLE and think it is a great knife. But, I still prefer my BR and my BR is my main large user. So, in the end, I don't use my DFLE that much. However, for those who don't have a CT or BR, you won't feel like you are needing much more by having a DFLE or SOD.

For the most part, I agree VERY close to VoxHog:

If not carrying my knife:

If I feel like I want to carry a large knife:

I like my SFNO - O.K.. To me, I like my Hell Razor about as much (????). But, I personally easily prefer my SARSquatch over both for similar size and use. So, for me, my SARSquatch is going to be my first choice for a non-Res-C large carry choice.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about "Not wanting to scare people".

On one hand, I feel an obligation to my passion for knives to somehow help train people to be more accepting of knives. I sometimes feel that I should make an effort to carry Visibly noticable sized knives in a Non-threatening way to help (try ??? in theory ?????? ) put people at ease around such knives and people carrying them. I feel people should understand that knives are tools.... and if it is needed for self-defense, why shouldn't that be acceptable as well. I feel that if people become so much more and more afraid of knives and people carrying knives that sooner or later more and more knife laws will be passed against carrying, using and possibly even having certain knives. People fear what they don't understand or are not familiar with. I could rant about SHEEPLE for a long time..... I will try not to.

On the other hand.... I have not had much success putting people at ease with knives - even many that I know VERY well. Granted, I know a few people and friends who are very at ease with my knives. But, I also know quite a few people who I can just see the fear, apprehensiveness and similar red flags when they see most ANY of my knives - usually just from a little folder like my "shortened / modified" Leek, but even much more so with a decent/more usuable sized knife like a Benchmade 710 or similar size. Something like a RUKUS or Fixed blade like a MPLE or SS4 might give certain people heart attacks. .... sometimes, I feel they need the "In your face... get over it" approach. I just CAN'T understand why these people are fine using 8" Chef knives in their kitchens as "TOOLS", but get so worked up over someone actually CARRYING around a "tool". ... Just because I am "Practical" and want to have a VERY useful tool around to use when I NEED it.... argh!!! I actually often take my knives out "intentionally" and start playing with them.. (just opening, closing and handling) in front of certain friends and family who are sheeple. I watch them get nervous and ask what the problem is. I know very well they are afraid of certain knives, but I just don't understand and it BUGS me.

*** Most of these people are also people who don't own guns and would NEVER shoot an intruder even if the intruder could/would possibly kill their entire family!!! ... I just CAN NOT understand this mentallity!!! and again... it BUGS me.

I honestly feel this is a STUPID side of these people and these are people I know well and often generally respect their intelligence in most cases. But,.... with knives and guns... ..... However, .... my wife doesn't seem to appreciate when I am so in their faces with "HER" family and certain friends. ... Anyway, I "sometimes" get testy with Sheeple.

Other times.... sadly... it is often just "easier" to be less confrontational. ... and sometimes I feel I "have" to try to be more accomodating to society. ... I don't like having to appease stupidity and unrational fear.

... sorry... I got worked up a bit..... didn't mean to hijack in any way... ... rant off.

KG im alwyas happy to read your opinions and views. i try to do the same thing as well as far as carrying a knife. I always carry my S2 Mora with me at work (i even sewed buttons on my work shorts to hang them from) and my EDC is a fiddlecraft bushcraft jr. most people barely notice the mora but some do. i always show it to them and they almost always ask if its illegal to carry it. my reply usually is "you wouldnt arrest a carpenter for carrying a hammer would you?". if they cant wrap their heads around that then i wash my hands of them. i always have a knife on me, even when i go to the bank.

i havent had a chance to go camping with any of my blades but im sure my SOD would see the most use. it can prepare food decently, it can chop up some wood it can whittle me some wood if im sitting back relaxing.

Not that It means much, but here goes my opinion. Camp knives should come in 2's or 3's at least. One should be a 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 fixed blade. The next a 7-10 incher (unless you are carrying an ax), and then you still might want this one "just for fun". And finally, a good folder (that you should always have on you anyway). That should cover all the "knife work" you would want/need to do. The only limit on the knives you take is how much weight you can carry!

I think I'm spoiled when it comes to long hiking/camping. I trust my CT too much, so I only bring one knife. It would stay pretty much somewhat sharp the entire week long camping trip.

JYD #84 This is my rifle, and that is my SHTF Busse knife.
