I got Crown Royal, Gibsons, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, and some Captain Morgan Gold. Bring a glass and I'll hook you up Jeff! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I even have some Moosehead in the fridge if you want a brewskie!

See, that's why I like hand sharpening. Much easier to do when I've had a glass or five of scotch!

There are many ways to do this. Personally, I use a hand sander with various grits of wet/dry sandpaper to re-profile the edge to convex (personal choice - I like convex edges) and then I strop the edge on leather with black and then green compound. After it's sharp I really only have to maintain the edge with the strop. It very rarely needs sharpening unless the edge rolls.

I have had very good results with both SR77 and Infi. I guess a belt sander would be quicker and less trouble, but that means you can screw up faster as well. Here's by Mutt and ASH:

The canvas on the strop is for your straight razor. I've been shaving this way for about ten years now, but I'm still learning every day. You strop on the canvas to remove the fine "teeth" before you put it on the leather.

I'm getting ready to experiment w/ a convex grind, but I was wondering how you maintain the edge in the field when it needs a touch up.

About a 2"x5" section from a mouse pad and some sandpaper. Simple, light, and cheap.

What grit would you take out w/ you? I'm assuming you're talking about wet/dry paper.

Yeah, some wet/dry. Grit depends on whatever pieces I have lying around, but generally, 80, 120, and 200. That should cover the basics when out in the field.

Somebody made a Altoids sandpaper/mousepad sharpening kit. I'll try and find pics, but it's basically a section of mousepad glued on top of the lid of an altoids tin, with the sandpaper inside. You wrap the sandpaper around the lid and close it and it holds the sandpaper down.
