Jeff, what is the function of the leather piece wrapped around the 3rd sheath from the top?

That's a Frog...

The Sheath can be pulled out of the frog when needed without having to take the belt loop part off. Just ask you fellow Hawaiian, Matthew about it, he has it now.

Alright Matthew, PM me the details of this "frog" feature!

P/D - the "frog" is simply another way to carry the knife/sheath. Old-time Mountain Men and such often had knife sheaths with just a stud sticking out of the leather, which would support the knife and prevent it from falling off his belt or capote sash/belt. The "frog" goes around the sheath and catches the stud with the notch, and provides a more secure carry than just tucking the knife in a belt, as it also has a belt loop. I hope this explanation makes sense!

By the way, I have made some of my flashlight holders quite similar to a "frog". They are basically just two straps sewn together, one holding the flashlight and the other a belt loop. Old belts are great for this!

Great explaination, Tom, Thanks!

Old belts are great for all sorts of stuff. One of my co-workers at work (my day job) brought me a newspaper clipping showing where some company was making custom flooring tiles from old belts...

Thanks Jeff! But flooring tiles made from belts worn by people? I guess I could see them using hay-baler belts or similar equipment belts due to their size, but "people belts" seem awfully small for that!

I agree doesn't seem feesable, but there were pics in the write up and they were made of lines of old leather every day ole peoples belts, I'm guessing glued tightly together. Very expensive stuff, and you do have to wonder where they'd get all those belts...

They probably got them at thrift stores -- if Andy didn't beat them to the belts!
