I don't HATE choils, and I have knives where they are pretty handy. But for most tasks, I dislike them most of the time.
For example, if I'm trying to whittle a point or peel bark off a stick, I want the leverage I get by working with the part of the blade right next to the handle. If there's a choil, I have to use a section an inch or more from the handle, and I lose leverage. A royal PITA most of the time. SO choke up on the choil, and it will work your hand can get even closer to the place of cutting with the choil no ricassico or anything.

The choil on a knife is used to make the owner realize that they wish they had a cutting edge that ran all the way to the scales on a futire knife. Made me laugh, but it is kinda true. I love the SAR5 because there is NO choil. The flip side of the argument is that a proper choil allows you to turn a big knife into a small knife and still retain the length for baton work or chopping. Many knives are just as comfortable in a choked up grip and Busse-kin is usually good about this. For the record, in knives with a blade length of less than 4" I'm a choil hater; although I do like the semi-choil of the Mud Puppy.

So now instead of my nice comfy ergonomic handle, I'm choking up on a narrow piece of steel, with an uncomfortable split in my fingers, and probably the corner of the sharp edge poking me in the knuckle. No thanks. Choils are fine on big monster blades, but I much prefer blade all the way to the handle on smaller knives.

Hmmm. Maybe it is because I have small hands or maybe because of how I use my blades but I really prefer a choil on small knives and could take ‘em or leave ‘em on big choppers. 9.5 times out of 10 I am using my small knives for dressing out big game and as such I want as much tip control as possible. I feel like a choil does a good job of ‘reducing” the length of the blade so that I get as much control as possible, yet when I need more length/belly I can hold on the handle and have the best of both worlds (for me).
As far as my chopper goes (battle rat), I typically use that for batoning wood for the stove so the coil is really not needed. On a few occasions I have tried to whittle a bit with it around camp (using the choil), but I think I would have been just as happy to not have the coil there and use the handle.
The only time the choil has been a detriment to me is when I was filleting a few trout with the battle rat (not the best tool, but the only one I had) and the meat kinds slipped beyond the edge and into the choil making it kinda snag instead of slice.
Not trying to be contentious here, but does anyone else have stories of when (in use) they found the choil to be a negative?

Actually, they really come in handy when doing something like peeling an apple or some other intricate work...Other than that - I never use them either. Watch ole Noss peel his apples on Knifetests.com - He uses the choil while peeling the apple but not for anything else really- occasionally he uses it for the more intricate cuts in the strap..
My 2 cents <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
