Short knives, no choil. Long knives, no choil. Middling knives, choil.

Up to a five inch knife, no choil. Honestly, how many of you have trouble with tip control on a five incher?

For longer than five inches, up to seven—eight at the extreme—a choil can help. Knives in this size bracket are long enough that tip control becomes problematic. But they are short enough that using a choil can improve tip control.

Eight inches to ten, twelve, longer…no choil. What’s the point? Or rather, where’s the point? Use a choil to choke up and the tip is still too far away for decent control. You’re better off with no choil and an extra sharp section of edge just in front of your handle. Something you can do intricate carving with. If you need good tip control, hold the blade near the tip and go to work.

I can palm a basket ball and large hands on the DMDC I had which has a tight handle meant the choil grip was a handy thing for me but I prefer a large handle and no choil on my smaller game/food prep knives...and find them handy on the larger ones...the RMD which is a favourite... works fine with the choil but might be even better without it...the knife I am sure would be better without the small cosmetic choil is the SAR4...that blade is just begging to go straight to the handle...but my Jackhammer and SJTAC seem to work well with the choil and everything going on up from there....my bushcraft knives with no choil have taught me the blessing of a good comfortable handle with an edge running right to the handle...no question on the comfort front on these small 4 inch knives...you can do a lot more carving work with this design.

I guess Bussekin knives must have started out with big blades and incorporated them....then when going to smaller blades kept the choil for a "trademark" type look...

Again, maybe it is just how I use my knives, but I really need more control for skinning on a five inch (and less blade). I typically take either the Howling Rat, SS4, or even tried the Safari Skinner once and all of those would have been much less useful (for me) sans choil. In fact, if there was a knife about an inch shorter than those with a choil, I think that would be the perfect skinning knife (for me). I remember when I first saw the mud puppy I about wet myself thinking that would be "almost perfect" (especially w/ the mudders)... if only it was a bit skinnier stock. Problem is that I'm not sure where I was when they released it so I got no love. I doubt it will ever happen but a MP made out of SR101 that was less than 3/16 thick would probably be the last (hunting) knife I ever bought ...think there is a hope for a CG ?

I think there are two issues here. One is, can you control the tip of a 5” knife without a choil?

The other is, do you want a 5” knife for skinning? I haven’t hunted in years, but when I did I used a shorter knife myself. That isn’t about tip control, it’s about using the right tool for the job.

Yeah I can control it, but I would rather have 'more' control if possible. And you are correct, (and like I said) I would want less than a 5" blade for skinning too. I like the choil on smaller knives and can take 'em or leave 'em on the larger ones. Right tool for right job is correct, but I hunt from my pack and NOT a 4x4. The tools that I keep are the ones that can function in as many uses as possible. Hence, I would like a smaller knife that can to the tip work and one that has the needed (for me) belly. In my limited experience, a smaller, choiled (not sure if that is even a word:) ) knife does that as opposed to one that is w/o a choil. Could I use two blades? Sure. But again, I will likely be hiking many miles and would love to leave out any extra weight possible so if I could get away with only one fixed blade then that would be great for me.

Right now, the best blade that I have found for these chores is the spyderco native III. I love that knife and it has been my choice for the majority of my animals...I guess I would just feel better with a fixed blade if possible.

IF we are just talking about the S5, I think I could go either way as I can see the value w/ or w/o the choil (for me) for this length of blade...but again, a shorter blade needs to have a usable choil for me to buy it...but to each their own!

That’s actually a good argument for a choil on a small knife. For the circumstances you describe, a small blade with a choil seems like the best solution.

I’ve been a “Forget the choil on a small knife” guy for years. You have shown me something new, for which I thank you.

I wonder if there are other specific situations where a choil or ricasso on a small knife would be an advantage?
