I am glad you have a real "smith". I am betting that the groups will tighten up, I never thought about checking the bolt closure/gap. Keep us up tp date on it when you get back out.

Those are defects that I wouldn't expect in a CZ. Maybe you got a Monday rifle <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I can also imagine how they might alter the barrel harmonics. Glad your 'smith was able to find a "smoking gun". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
Good luck at the range!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

The overall quality, fit and finish is way down from my previous CZs. The bolt is extremely rough, like an old Savage with some sand thrown in. My old gun dealer had problems with his recently purchased 7.62x39 carbine, too. He had some choice words for the way CZ treated him, too. The front sight was not calibrated to the rear sight, a mismatched set of sights. Took the CZ to the range today. The forecast was for wind and pm thunderstorms, but it was still fairly calm when I arrived. On the way out of my road I got a package from UPS from BRKT. After shooting about 150 rds, I let the rifle cool and cleaned it. Time to open the package. A Smoke Jumper (actually CS SRK in Carbon V with a micarta handle). And a Clax. I have no idea why Mike sent me a Clax. Doesn't look like it would fair well batoning, does it? The wind starting picking up and my 100m groups went to heck, but I did get some 1 MOA groups with the CCI 17gr bullets before it got too windy. What I learned: 1. 17 HMR caliber rifles are finicky about ammo, like .22s. 2. 17 HMR bullets are very affected by winds. 3. the 20 gr HPs group better in the wind than the 17gr V-Max bullets, but in my rifle they hit 2" low and 1" right of poa at 100m when zeroed with 17gr bullets. That group is in the lower left quadrant of the 100 yd precision rifle target. POA was the diamond. On the way home, I saw that somebody had a much worse day than I did. I stopped by two gun shops on the way home. No more CCI V-Max or Hornady V-Max in town. Picked up four boxes of Winchester Supreme 17gr V-Max. They are expensive at $17/50. Who knows? They may be "the ones". I had to go to the bank to get ammo money.

Thanks for the update. I guess like a lot of other things it is going to be trial by ammo to find the sweet shooter.
Nice blades too!

Nice blades too! I did have some nice tight 3 and 4 shot groups going before the wind kicked in. 100m is a long way out there for rimfires. At least I can get 1 moa or less when the wind isn't blowing. Now to fine tune it with just the right ammo. It takes time.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Given that you live on the coast HD and wind must be a fairly regular condition would it perhaps be easier to do the paperwork on a moderator for a centrefire rifle for 100 yard use? A .223 is pretty cheap to reload and is quiet although my favourite which I use is a 6mm PPC. I have the same issue with wind living high up on the fells...which is why I got rid of my .22 Sako...and whilst I do miss having an easy ability to shoot sub-sonic ammo with no "sonic" crack...the wind actually takes the noise away easily when it is blowing. It is only on quiet still days that the .22 is missed.

The .223 is a favorite of mine, but much too loud. I own 5 rifles in .223. But I am getting better and better groups. They aren't pretty, but I have stuck four in a row touch each other at 100m. The 17 HMR sounds about like a .22LR Stinger. It is quieter than the .22 WMR.

Oh I get it now, a moderator is a sound suppressor. Yes, a muffler on a .223 might help, but I'll still get that supersonic crack. As fate would have it, a local suppressor maker has developed one for the 17 HMR that is very quiet. If I can hit within .8" or so of poa, that's good enough. I'm getting there. The trees in my yard make it less windy than out by the marsh.

I never asked for the Clax. Not my kind of knife, really. It was a nice surpise, and I hate to be an ingrate, but it just doesn't do anything for me. Maybe I'll sell it.

Peter has really set me to thinking about a suppressed or "moderated" as he says, .223. I have one Ar-15 that does .75"@ 100m. Big medicine for squirrels and such, but what fun that would be. I think I'll check into it. What the heck, as a Life NRA member, I'm sure I'm on the "Ones to be gathered in" list anyway. I think the license is about $200 or so.
