I know what you mean about expense in rifles but thought the two 17HMR's and whatever .22's you have might enable a rotation rather than more $$ being required? Anyway...if the Marlin is "on song" and does the job...you are sorted. My own awareness of cash tied up in rifles and in knives has me very much thinking that thinning the herd would make perfect sense....just need to make the "leap" and get started....these things though are possessions which really seem to "cling" to you every time you give it some consideration.

Hindsight is 20/20, Peter. I could have bought the Sako with just one 17 HMR or 17M2 barrel for the $1200 I have in the two rifles and one scope I bought. But like my redundancy in knives, I like having more guns. Or I could have just settled with the Marlin and only been out $400. But since my previous CZs had been so accurate and nice, I wanted another CZ. Now I am checking into a match grade but standard profile barrel for my 77/22 All-Weather in 17M2. If they discontinue the caliber, which is unlikely, I can always put the .22LR barrel back on. The little Mach 2 far exceeds the long range (100m) accuracy of most .22s, and requires no hold over or under for shots out to that range. It's one thing to shoot a match and have your elevation knob marked for known ranges. It's quite another to get on a target fast at an estimated range, and adjust. Easier to aim dead on and fire. This hobby is as bad as golf!

Yes I know what you mean! Pleased that the "golf" expense has missed me though....

+1! I was rummaging through my ammo and I found some old 20 round boxes of 5.56 I had bought 10 years or so ago. The price sticker said $3.79. I think a lot of my spare cash is going to be tied up in ammo purchases for awhile.

The greedy dealers here are now charging over $20 tax included, for a box of 50 Winchester Supreme 17 HMR cartridges. For Rimfire ammo. It's insane.

Yup, ammo is getting expensive. I've been stocking up on 9mm, .223 and .308, its getting hard to find now, even .22LR ammo is getting scarce.

It has been a bit frustrating, but my CZ in 17 HMR shoots just fine now. I noticed that the Leupold high rings did not seat properly in the grooved receiver. So I ordered 2 sets of Burris steel high tip-off rings, one for the Marlin, too, since it had some no name Chinese rings on it. When I mounted the Burris high rings on the CZ they seated properly, but would not allow the 42mm OBJ lens to clear the barrel. Darn. So I took the V-16 off the Marlin along with its no name rings and mounted the V-16 on the CZ. It fit and allowed barrel clearance. So I bore sighted it and went to mount the V-24 on the Marlin with the Burris .22 High Rings. No go. Darn! So I installed the Weaver style bases along with some finger nail polish on the threads and tried to use my Weaver high power rings. No go. Called Shooters and they had one set of Burris high Z rings in 1". 30 min to closing so I drove through the rain and got the rings just in time. That worked, both rifles now had properly mounted scopes. Bore sighted it. Then I turned my attention to my Ruger 77/22. I pulled the barrel to install the new 17 HM2 barrel and noticed that the wedge bolts were not evenly tightened. So I reinstalled the .22LR barrel. Then I pulled the BSA 2-7 off and mounted a new Bushnell 3-9 x 32 rimfire scope. Nice fit. Bore sighted. I will install the 17 HM2 barrel later on. Right now I have two bricks of 22LR Remington Subsonic HPs and no 17 HM2 ammo. Finally, all I needed was a break in the weather. Today it was storming and raining so the match was cancelled. I loaded all three rifles and drove to the range. Everyone left. The rain stopped the wind died down. The clouds parted. God loves me. I sighted in the Ruger at 40m. Nice. It never shot this well before. Proper torquing and even tightening of the barrel mounting must have done something to it!

3/16" groups. Good to go! Look out varmints!

Wow this is like a knifeguy post. Oh well. About that CZ with the Chinese rings and the V-16. It just loved that new Winchester ammo. Check this out. At 100m.
7/16" group at 100m. Oh yeah! Because of the expense and scarcity of 17 HMR ammo, I went with 3 or 4 shot groups instead of my usual 5. Probably only going to get one shot at a varmint most times anyway.

Oh and the Marlin was no slouch today, either. It liked the Winchester ammo, too. 5/16" and 3/8" groups at 100m. Oh yeah, rock and roll.

It's Miller time. Three rifles scoped and zeroed, all sub-moa! I forgot to take pics of the CZ with the Chinese rings and V-16, but it looks pretty much as it did with the Leupold rings and the V-24, only the cheap rings fit better. So now I have two sets of Burris steel .22 high rings and one set of Leupold .22 high rings just sitting in a box! I need another beer.

Thanks, UNK. I'll check it out. My CZ is on the money now with 7/16" groups at 100 meters.

Thanks, sumo. This one has been a real pain. Three sets of rings, two scopes, free-foated barrel, trigger job, bedding job, stock inletted again, and various ammo swaps and trials. But it's on the money now. The Marlin still shoots a bit tighter but both shoot < 1/2" groups at 100m (109 yds). That's smokin for a rimfire! I was only going for 1 moa (1" @ 100yds).

And even my old skinny barreled 77/22 shoots like my 77/22 Varmint model now. All I did was remove the barrel and reinstall it. Plus a better scope. 3/16" groups @ 40m (44 yds). Rock on! I'll have another beer! It has been an outstanding rainy Saturday! Sometimes I surpise myself.

Awesome range report Vic! I'm really happy to hear that it all the tuning (and cussing!) paid off in the end.

I was out earlier today and helped another ground squirrel meet his maker with my 10/22. Some of the ground squirrels will let you walk within 10-15 yards, others will bug out when they see you at 50+ yards. I popped two ground squirrels with CBs from my Single Six revolver. Weird.

We have M2 ammo in stock up here in MT. If you want me to ship you some let me know.
