I don't feel Micarta/G-10 should be grouped with Natural materials.

They don't come close as far as performance is concerned!

I think Bruce was trying to have people vote on grips concerning what will reduce the impact of the chopping on your hand (like the Res C and Mudders do), as opposed to a more dense and solid material that directly transfers the energy of the impact in your hand.

Am I correct?

Looks like I was right!

I've found that Mudders reduce impact a lot, Res C a little, and denser materials like G10, micarta and natural (Like Wood) reduce even less, if at all.

My biggest and best chopper is < 1/8" thick. It's a Cold Steel Panga.

There you go, Vic. I knew this would be interesting.

I didn't count it in the poll, because machetes are not what most people would call "Choppers". But in a huge chop-off I did last year, with bowies, goloks, kukris, and machetes, a 14" Condor Panga-style machete out chopped even my FFBM which has a nice convex edge. So then I put the Condor panga against a 16" CS Panga, and the CS Panga became the champion of my yard in pure chopping. I still believe that many knives are too thick and too heavy. That is fine for lateral strength for prying or batoning, but heavy and thick doesn't always win in chopping and never wins in slashing. I wish Jerry would do an anorexic NMFBM about 1/8" to 3/16" thick. It would be the ultimate camp machete.

I don't have the selection of HD, but my best chopper is also a relatively thin knife - a CS LTC Kukri. It's got more width near the head end than a typical kukri, which puts a lot of weight into your swing and gives almost hatchet-like performance when chopping.

edit: A pic of the kukri next to a Ka-Bar Heavy Bowie and SR Mini Uncle Mojo for scale... It doesn't look all that big or impressive compared to some of the huge choppers, and it's actually fairly lightweight in comparison, but most of that weight rides near the tip, so it chops really well. Also doesn't wear me out as much swinging it

If the Yard made a kukri of this exact same design, with res-C and a thin SR77 blade, I'd buy several of them in a heartbeat.

Those are good choppers, MM. There is a technique to chopping with thin blades, but thin bites deep.

We have been asking for one for years. It would sure be more affordable than an INFI Kukri. And since CS no longer makes that model, except in a cheaper machete version with polypropylene handles in 1055, the SYKCO Kukri would be in a class by itself.

I've found that I'm partial to smaller to midsized knives. I have a S6CG, a YKCG and a MPLE. I've got a S5CG on order, and hope that Dan comes out with a S5LE in INFI. But I don't really have any interest in any of the larger SY knives. I've held a SODCG and a DFCG, but just felt they were to large for me to use effectively. I also don't like any of the Busse or Swamp Rat knives because of them not having the Res C handles and the cost. Now if only Dan brings out a S5LE in INFI, then I'll be set!

Too complicated for me right now.... in a hurry. Maybe I can get back to this and give it some thought. But, I don't think there is a simple single answer for me in some catagories.

You have to add more catagories to cover intended uses.

Great poll! Thank you for putting something like this together...wonder if Dan would use the final results as an aid to the knives he puts out?
I'm pretty much in the same boat you are, MAJORSDAD. I've got a few choppers including a DFCG. But the zombies haven't arrived here yet and there's not a whole lot to chop around the City of the Fallen Angel. So my choppers are mostly conversation pieces.
Yeah, and I have a hard time buying a knife and not using it. So, maybe if I ever get some land, I'll reconsider. As far as the zombies, I've got plenty of other weapons to deal with them!

I know Dan pays attention to what we have to say. He's not only said he does, he's actually produced knives based on our input.

So let's start a coordinated campaign to bug him to make a SY kukri, then...

Great poll, Bruce. As I made my selections, I realized I basically described three knives that already exist: HCLE, S5CG, DFLE. As for the last one, it'll probably be a long wait before a 6-7" long 3/16" thick INFI drop point with ResC handles shows up in a Busse store. Guess the SOD will have to hold down the camp until it arrives.

ooohhhhh. so I think I messed up. Were we supposed to vote for when we liked each attribute, or just for the one we liked? As in, I voted I liked mudders for edc, and thus could not vote for any other material for that category. OR, was I supposed to vote that I liked mudders for x,y,z AND the "old" res-c for x,y,z if I also liked them for that same category? Am I just slow?

That is interesting. Also Infi and SR101 seem to be a little more universal in appeal with the mid range knives being the highest. 154CM and SR77 are clearly skewed to one side...

True, I would bet on the SR77 and 154CM polls to stay skewed, but unsure on Infi and SR101.

Bruce,
Will you be able to see the total of people who took the poll? It would be interesting to know things like X% of respondants like 154CM for EDC knives, etc.

Shouldn't you get a discount for all the research you help do for the yard???

if dan or jerry design anything based on this poll, i think my answers should have been weighted more heavily than everyone else's.

gotta wonder how many people's votes were affected by the specs of their dream busse.

It is what we prefer so maybe some would like the SS chopper. I did not choose the 154CM for chopper because I don't care as much about rust and if I did i would choose Infi...But, to be the devils advocate... If you had a 1/4 inch 154 CM blade with some sweet handles and it was HT'd to be slightly softer than the norm for 154CM - could it make a decent chopper? Just curious...

I know this probably didn't help a whole lot, but I looked at that whole poll, and said "I'll take it."

The votes are still coming in and some trends are beginning to change.

Please keep voting. Every vote counts!

The larger the sample size the better the accuracy...if we could just hit 400 votes for a statically sound sample...

Regardless of the number of votes, the feedback, insight and desires are always important to me.

As they say Vote and Vote Often

Keep up the good work

Thanks
Dan

It was either a labor of love or insanity. I'm not sure which.

I find the two tend to go hand-in-hand

Looking over the poll so far, I gotta say, I'm not too surprised by the stats. Everythings' fallen where I figured it would.

I like thin blades, micarta/G10/natural, with INFI, SR101 or 154CM for EDCs.
I like think blades, res-c, with INFI or SR77 for choppers.

The Utility/Fighter and Camp knives can be kind of a mix.

One of my biggest pet peaves that I have discoverd about res-c on EDCs is res-c under a shirt tends to grip onto the shirt and keep it lifted up way more than micarta/g10/natural grips do. Otherwise I really love the feel and grip of res-c.
