Bashing it through some wood for about 30 minutes usually works for me and leaves me with a nice pile of kindling to boot ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

oh yea another ? - does rust damage the strength of the break... for example, if its on the edge of the blade, does that make it more prone to chipping or breaking?

It would have to have some really serious rust...deeply pitted and then it would just require a some sharpening.

This sounds like a little bit of surface rust, common on bare non stainless steel. A quick swipe with fine steel wool will take care of it...you can add a drop of oil..but most likely not needed. Since it is the edge, stroke down and away from the blade...avoid the thought of running with the edge.

Funny...that is actually what I do...not so much for rust (it does work) but for stress management <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

the best way to prevent rust is to use it! otherwise just hit it with some fine sandpaper like 1000 grit.

My crash axe got a little rust on the edge once and I just chopped some stuff with it and it faded away. It was just very light surface rust.

It'll just dull it that;s all.
same as steel wool or fine sandpaper will.

I've always used a Scotchbrite pad. It seems to work fine for me.

A few people beat me to it, but whackin' wood is the best way to get rid of it. Sandpaper, Scotchbrite, etc. can all leave scratches.
