I can't go this year, and to be honest, I didn't think I could ever justify flying (or driving, Clint, you're a mad man!) to Atlanta just to see some knives.

But after reading about these special "Test" blades and the induction dinner and the chance to finally meet the coolest bunch of kindred spirits in person... I can't justify NOT going next year!

I want to go so bad this year but I am 17 so I can't rent a hotel or anything.
Next year I will be 18 and will make it for sure.

Like I said, when I found out that the dinner is for families I thought this would make an awesome summer vacation next year.

We're talking about renting an RV and taking several days to travel, see seven states with our destination being Blade 2010.

I figure a year is plenty of time to plan and save up.

I'm excited already!

Which states?

Starting in Utah, then Wyoming, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee then Georgia.

newDOGma - last year we spent a week there during Blade, with a couple of days before and after the show to do whatever we wanted. That's what we will do next year if we fly there. If we drive, we will stop by my son's home for a day or two near Huntsville Alabama. He is only about three hours from the show. Either way, it will be an anniversary/vacation trip for us. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

If this is going to be our big summer trip I'm glad to have a year to plan it.

It would be a bit of a waste to travel that far just for Blade.

Neat. maybe you could stop near where I am and we could have dinner or something I live in south east Iowa.

Well, there are a LOT of food places near Blade! From Maggiano's (~$50.00 pp) to KFC, Olive Garden, McDonald's and Burger King, along with Sonny's Bar-b-Que and Fogo's(~$50.00 pp). Your family will be able to eat without breaking the bank! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> We will go to Olive Garden instead of Maggiano's, and Sonny's instead of Fogo's in order to save money (though their food is GREAT!). I have travelled with a family before. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Our thinking with the RV is that we can eat for cheap most meals, and splurge a little on some local cuisine!

Making a trip out of it helps justify the time and expense of going to a knife show.

Plus, we all have plenty of time to find the best way there. My wife and I are talking about renting an RV, but if we find that flying the whole family is cheaper, then we'll go that route.

We want to bring our kids, so I'm thinking driving will be best, and we can stop at fun and interesting places in a bunch of states neither of us have ever been to before!

Flying to Atlanta gonna cost me about $1000. If I buy knives for $3000 and dont have to pay swedish taxes it´s gonna be worth it. So I need $4000... and I only got $49.95 for my soul... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

A 24 foot RV (big enough for my family of 6) with gas and food plus $1000 for steel will be close to $5000.

Tikigod - I USED to feel the same way, but after finally making my first Blade in 07' I changed my mind! It is much more than "just a knife show"! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> What really made it for me was the chance to meet the Busse families and so many fellow Dogs, Rats, and Hogs. When I first got there I felt like a total stranger and "a fish out of water". That changed as soon as I got to the Busse booths - they treated me like family! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> That was nicer and more fun to me than seeing all the other knives and knife companies!! Of course, there are plenty of them there as well. I enjoyed some of the demonstrations such as the knife-cutting championship and the samurai sword demonstration among others.
My wife and I went again in 08' and we had a great time again. The only reason we missed this year's show was that my son and his family came to visit us. If I go to the blade show, am I pretty much guaranteed to be able to buy a scrap yard knofe for retail? It would suck to go and then not be able to buy some cool stuff.

The odds of them selling out of everything at the show are pretty low - I'm sure there will be several models of Scrap Yard available.

I left BLADE last year with two Son of Dogfathers, two Regulator Bowies, a Bird Dog, and a Mud Puppy. Plus some Busse and Swamp Rat stuff. It was fun <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

We host a dinner for all Hogs, Rats and Dogs that are in attendance at Blade. It is by invitation. Families are welcome and we pick up the tab.

At the dinner we have a nighting of the new attendees with a special induction name. There is usually some kind of surprise/game at the dinner. It is just a bunch of fun

Hey Joe, hey guys. Its finals week but everything is going well. I recently got back from a wedding but I learned a train ticket from Iowa to CA is about 100 bucks. So if I can get one to the east coast for a similar price I think Blade 2010 should be not only affordable but very possible.

So, how do you get tickets for blade and do they run out or can you buy them on site?

And whats the best strategy for transporting your expensive haul home? I thought of taking a sleeper train, since I would prefer to not check any knives in flying luggage..

M/D - you can buy tickets at the show, but a VIP pass from any of the knife companies will save you money. The Busse companies will post something about the passes well in advance of the show. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

You can have the busse crew keep your blades in a box behind the table, and they will ship them to you once they get back to Ohio.

I boxed up my knives and shipped them at the UPS Store about a mile south of the show. I DO NOT trust the airlines with my knives, and the UPS box only took a couple of days to reach me.

I know man, I am in the same situation with my wife. But, There are two huge malls right next to the convention center. and the braves are in town all weekend. My wife said there is a big outlet mall within 20 minutes. So I think there will be plenty for the ladies too.

incase anybody is interested. I found a pretty good deal for rooms at the embassy suites. It is actually connected to the convention center. Free breakfast, and free adult beverages from 5-7 everyday. boooya!

It was $164 for friday and saturday night.

Yeah, that's how much I pay to stay at the Waverly.

My girlfriend had a great time. She thought the show was interesting, and had a blast during the dinners and the late night socializing/drinking that takes place.

she will definately want to check out the aquarium.
