...I can look at that knife and think what "MY" opinions are of what it should be. But, I think it might be helpful if Dan chimmed in on what he is hoping it to be ideally designed for.

... Am I making sense or rambling incoherently?

.

You make sense to me, KG. I think you are right about it being a military knife. It is a Bowie knife, as is the Ka-Bar style combat knife. Like that combat knife, it is and was used more for utility purposes than in hand to hand combat, but it was used for that, too. It sure feels good in the hand.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

The Ka-Bar and the Recon Scout come to mind for me. I think Dan is looking to DOMINATE those two otherwise worthy knives.

And I agree. Too many people seem to believe that a good military knife is a fighter. I have not been in the military, but know enough to know that hand to hand combat is NOT what a good military knife is primarily designed for - although "CAN" be if needed.

Similarly, I again hope Dan would sort of establish the intent parameters of the knife to keep peoples feedback and reviews geared towards what he wants.

And/or possibly get some sort of poll or feedback from those of you who have been in the military and what the primary needs and uses are for such a knife.

Given those parameters, I can provide more meaningful feedback.

Maybe even a series of primary tasks and tests or something???

I like the looks of that Golok Vic.

I think we will need a chop off / comparison with it vs. some of your other machetes and the BRKT Golok.

Another forum member was telling me about picking up some "new" Condor blade. So, I am curious about what Condor currently has to offer. I have been digging through their website, but would like to hear some reviews.

.

I'll do that on another forum, as there are no Busse-made goloks to compare it with. Condor had their new bushcraft knives, including a Nessmuk, and new Kukri. I own several Condors.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Scores? Here's my scores.

First was the Zilla, I'm using Jerry's publicly posted pic here... and yes, it is a BEAST!
[Linked Image from i449.photobucket.com]

I got an amazingly awesome knife that bumps my SnG out of the rotation. It has Rick's custom grind and the carbon fiber scales that are only on knives that sell via lottery at the show. Rick said that there are only a few of these sold each year and "maybe" twenty total exist.

Check out the scales on this Chopweiler! I asked Eric & Garth what was going on and he said that they found a set of old school Ratweiler scales and cut it to fit the Chopweiler. I guess this means that my unique black/tan is going out the door to make room.

A very cool Highstreet. The black paper is butter.
[Linked Image from i449.photobucket.com]

A very functional and comfortable Vex in D2 that provides a LOT of blade for the size/weight
[Linked Image from i449.photobucket.com]

And lastly, two Condor machetes in carbon steel, the Bolo and the El Salvador
[Linked Image from i449.photobucket.com]

I picked up a few more blades too but got them home and decided that I like my current knives better (color, scales, weight, etc) so they won't stay.

Man there are a bunch of nice looking blades in some deserving homes. Congratulations to those who were able to acquire these fine pieces of steel.

You may notice a mysteriously empty paper sheath. It came with something in it. It was THAT WHICH MUST NOT BE SHOWN.

So many goodies!

Y'all can take this any way you want to, but Jerry is serious about the test team idea, as is Dan. As Jerry explained to me last night, he has not made kukris before. Making a kukri has been a challenge because he has to use so much wide stock just to get that shape using stock removal. Traditional kukris are forged and beaten into shape by hand. It takes a lot of INFI stock to make just one Busse kukri. And INFI is not cheap. So the challenge is to get the performance and proper balance of of a hand forged kukri in production knife. Jerry honestly wants feedback to tweak the final design some, if necessary. When I asked Dan about a Scrap Yard kukri, the problem of stock width came up. It would cost a lot of money to grind away half the stock to make a kukri, and Dan is committed to high performance at a reasonable cost. Maybe a bolo would be a better idea. And the new bowie has some new features like integral quillion, tapered radiused tang and such. He wants to know how they perform and how they are liked so he can make any necessary changes in the final production model. The knife feels fantastic in the hand, much lighter and faster than you might expect. The folks at Busse, Swamp Rat, and Scrap Yard care about their customers and are just trying a new approach to getting the knives as perfect as possible before going into full production. I think we need to help them out and give this test team idea a chance. And I was only kidding about the test team forum. It doesn't exist. Even if it did, I couldn't talk about it.

I can understand Jerry wanting to have feedback on the Khukri because other manufacturer's have had problems with grinding Khukri's from stock. Extreme Ratio certainly have had a few...

http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1111600

The design is also one whereby a lot of stress is passed down the blade to the narrowest part of the knife near the hilt....perhaps because of this the knife has not been done with a choil...Jerry may have discovered when doing prototypes that putting a choil on the blade which reduced the depth of the blade considerably by the hilt caused a weakness in that area? I am only surmising this because his initial drawings did include a choil...but the Test Team version does not.

I believe his version though with a full tang may also be an area where feedback on the handle and grip design is something he also wants because the traditional comfort of a smooth wrap around handle on a khukri is not present in his design and after extended chopping he may want feedback as to whether fuller smooth linen micarta grips might be suggested?

Personally I think that smooth grips would be potentially my first thought although the option of a wider flared front and rear to the grip like a khukri might help with minimising the potential for losing grip on the knife if chopping without a lanyard.

His design however with a full tang I suspect will be the toughest design option to ever be done....although things like this won't be known until the knife is well tested. Hence the "test team" idea...although I also think this is a pretty good way to encourage sales as well...which cannot hurt....

Vic, AKA Shiny Dog, It was great catching up with you and the other Dogs at the Induction dinner. You out paced me by staying at the fountain until 3:30 in the morning. I also saw your "Score" pictures from the show and you did real well.

I really appreciate the feedback you have already provided on the Regulator. The test team will provide great feedback and deliver a tremendous value to their fellow Hogs and Dogs

Dan
