From what I've heard, Seed has disarmed WMD's with it. No joke.

My first Scrap Yard purchase was the SOD, a 7.5" bladed "camp knife". I ordered it from the company, so it took a couple of months to get here...

I couldn't wait that long.

So in the mean time I bought a Dumpster Mutt (Double Cut version) off of someone on Bladeforums and even after I got my SOD, I have to say the DM is my favorite knife right now.

Here it is on a hike with my family.

[Linked Image from i666.photobucket.com]

Now, when the Scrapper 5 gets here, we'll have to see which one I prefer!

Idk, but I'm assuming we're talking about the DMCG (combat grade) as several versions of the mutt are avaiable.
My opinion on it is that it's a cool knife, but I'm sure performance isn't that great.
I think it's a niche knife... it's great for people who are going to need to pry a LOT, but most would be better suited with one of the full flat ground models, (the Dumpster mutt limited edition, or dumpster mutt double cut) a Yardkeeper (CG)
or maybe an s5.
All of those are Plenty tough and would probably. suit most of you're needs better.

Many newcomers are drawn to the Dumpster mutt (I believe I was too actually) and I just want to ask why it appeals to you?

I had one and did not like it that much. It's the only Scrapyard knife that I have owned then sold. Now lots of people do like them and there was nothing really wrong with it from a performance standpoint. I just didn't like some things about it. I don't like the Busse Basic grip; I much prefer the small res-c grip or the mudder grip. I also thought it was excessively thick for anything I would ever use it for so I decided to get my money back out of it to buy other knives that I liked more.

Edit: My only experience is with the DMCG.

Welcome, Kiba. I have a combat grade Dumpster Mutt and a dual cut Dumpster Mutt. From a practicality standpoint, the dual cut is more useful due to the full height flat grind. What I will say about the combat grade is that is has a certain coolness factor just because it's a relatively small knife that is incredibly thick and heavy duty. The main reason I keep mine is simply because I think it's so cool and unique. To me, it seems like a very very heavy duty do-it-all knife. Not really good at any one thing, but can accomplish most tasks thrown at it. You'll never have to worry about breaking it, that's for sure!

There are some different variations of the DM out there, the most common ones out there are the 3 from the here: http://scrapyardknives.com/knives.htm

The one I own is the original DMCG. It has res-c handles left over from the old Busse Basic line. It also sports a saber grind and is the thickets of the DMs.
[Linked Image from img.photobucket.com]

Here's some comparison of the DMCG and DMDC. SY had a limited run at knob creek 08' and the DMDC was given some different color coatings, but spec wise, it's the same as the DC.

Here's a DMCG that's been "Banned"

The DMCG was my first SY and I love it. It feels great in the hand and can get scary sharp.

The original DMCG is noticeably heavier then the DMDC, just something to keep in mind for bike tours and backpacking.

Yes.

For Busse kin knives, almost everything with a coating is considered a CG, so technically that DMDC is a DMCG, but I called it a DMDC because it has specs just like one. The coated DMDC (or "DMCG") was a very limited run at Knob Creek 08', so I doubt you'd see it for sale. Does that make sense? haha.

Oh yeah! And it's only taken me a little less than 2 1/2 years! I think I joined shortly before the Dog Father was released. I guess I'm just not as "chatty" as some!

Oh, and Kiba, I'll second that the original DMCG is noticeably heavier than the DMDC. The two knives feel completely different in the hand! (Not necessarily a bad thing)

I have the original mutt and it is a tank. I'll keep mine because I like a [censored] near indestructible knife with a short a$$ blade. Wouldn't buy another one but it is a niche knife. I also have a yard guard and it is a much better knife imo for general hunting or bushcraft. My YG has a rainwalker sheath (search I stole it from horndog if you want to see pic's) The YG and rainwalker sheath are a great combination

I don't want to run the DM's down too much, if you do a lot of prying and battoning then they work great. If you are looking for a knife to do other stuff as well then I'd recommend the SRKW Ratmandu instead !!!

My son has one. Two words. GREAT KNIFE!

IMO SYKC need to do another run of CG Dumpster Mutts & Scrapper 6's. And whilst there at it, I would cut my pinky off to see EXACT replicas only in INFI

That sheath looks like it goes perfect with that blade. Kind of SWATty looking. Very professional. Rainwalker has some great product.

On a more serious note, I had two, but sold one to a friend who used it
to skin a moose last winter.
You'll notice that mine is a little shiny. I stripped and convexed it.
I usually take mine with me when I go fishing, and I probably should use it
more, but then I'd have to take time away from the RMD and SS4. It's going
to be interesting when the S5 comes.
Have to say though, that the DMDC is a really nice handling knife. I really
like it a lot.

Cheers

I've handled the Dumpster Mutt Combat Grade and didn't like the handle, but I just picked up a Dumpster Mutt Double Cut from Lunde off of the Blade Forums. It has the handles like the Yard Keeper I've got, so it should be just what I'm looking for. Plus, I like the blade profile better. It should be here next week. I'll try and post some pics when it gets here, if I can figure it out.

How many different versions of the Dumpster Mutt are there?

Andy? Cold One? Jim?

I know that there are more than just the DMCG and the DM Double Cut finish.

If I remember correctly, these are the versions I know of:

DMCG (combat grade)

DMLE (full flat grind and satin finish)

DMDC (dual cut)

A military over-run that was nearly completely serrated, full-flat ground, and satin finished

Dual cut styles with various color coatings and I think black or tan handle options.

As far as I know, that's all of them.

Too many to keep count of.
I'd like to get my hands on a DMCG like the one that Pitman had.
And of course, I'd like to get a DMLE.
I made my DMCG sort of an LE. Stripped it and convexed it.

Cheers

It's a great knife. Bigger than you think, but small enough to carry easily. It's very thick at the spine but will take an immense amount of abuse, I would imagine. I re-profiled the edge on mine, simply because I prefer thinner convex edges for cutting. Like I said, a great little knife and one of my favorites. I removed the bead blasted finish from my DMDC because that type of finish is a rust trap in my experience.

Here's mine:

DMLE (full flat grind and satin finish)

DMDC (dual cut)

A military over-run that was nearly completely serrated, full-flat ground, and satin finished

Dual cut styles with various color coatings and I think black or tan handle options.

As far as I know, that's all of them.

I recall that at Blade 2007 (or was it Blade West) they had Urban Gray Mutts (although there may have only been one or two of them); I think they may have also had black and tans, but I didn't get any of those so I'm not sure. The Fall 2007 Knob Creek featured DM LEs (at $129.95), which were my first DMs. The MOD (Military Overrun Dog [12/15/2007 - Razorganza #7]) was half-serrated -- however, I believe ColdOne owns a unique fully serrated prototype.

Double Cut Mutts were sold in March 2008; other than the original CG's introductory-release price of $69.95, the normal price of coated Mutts has always been $89.95, but the DCs were not only premium finished, but also sold at a special "Moving from Texas to Ohio" price of only $79.95. At the Fall 2008 Knob Creek, they had Mutts in Arctic White, Bama Clay, Moss, and Tanker Gray. I as far as I know, there were only 2 in Arctic White, 2 in Bama Clay and 3 in Moss -- I bought all of those and a couple of the tankers, although I later traded one of the Moss Mutts.

I want to buy one very much! I don't care of the style. I am on deployment and need one soon. I missed a private sale due to limited computer use. Anyone see one that is reasonably priced at this time?

How many different versions of the Dumpster Mutt are there?

Andy? Cold One? Jim?

I know that there are more than just the DMCG and the DM Double Cut finish.

If I remember correctly, these are the versions I know of:

DMCG (combat grade)

DMLE (full flat grind and satin finish)

DMDC (dual cut)

A military over-run that was nearly completely serrated, full-flat ground, and satin finished

Dual cut styles with various color coatings and I think black or tan handle options.

As far as I know, that's all of them.

the MOD (military overrun) was double-cut not satin and only 50 were made.

Here's some comparison of the DMCG and DMDC. SY had a limited run at knob creek 08' and the DMDC was given some different color coatings, but spec wise, it's the same as the DC.

I just picked up one of the DMDC, and one of the other differences I see in your pics of the DMDC Tanker Grey is that, yours has a slight bevel that starts about half way up the spine of the blade and goes all the way to the tip. My DMDC doesn't have that, but I was wondering if anyone here could add it but still have it look like if came from SY that way?

Great photos, gentlemen.

Military overrun is mentioned.

Did SYKCo actually have a military contract? Were these stamped with a number or "Prop US GVT" or similar?

What is the story behind this?
