It's a beautiful day, time to take my rubber handled choppers out for Sunday Dinner. Lets see how they compare on the little bit of liveoak I have left.

I'm back. Infernal phone! The Kershaw went first. It has a 10" blade of 3/16" thick D2 steel and a very nice santophrene handle. Its a little light.

All of these are serious choppers, no slakers here. They aint pretty, but they work.

Next up is one of my all-time favorite users, the Ontario Survival Bowie, 10" of Flat ground 1/4" thick 1095 high carbon steel with a kraton handle. Believe it or not, it out chops the Kershaw.

The Colt Jungle Commander did well, too. It has the best feeling handle of all.
Trouble is, its 420 stainless, and dulls quickly, still a good chopper for $30 or so. The Cold Steel LTC Kukri was no slouch, but its 1/8" thick blade would sometimes bind in the wood. It has a 12" blade of Carbon V steel and a kraton handle. It has similar heft to a 12" Ont machete. Its just too light for this hard liveoak.
So I'm saving the best for last. These are the bad boys of chopperdom.
I'm running out of logs to chop. Here are the finalists: The British Army Golok, with its 11" long .20" thick blade of Sheffield steel, The Scrap Yard Dog Father with its 10" long .28" thick convex ground blade of SR-77 steel, and the Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri, with a 12" long 5/16" thick flat ground blade of Carbon V steel. Its kraton handle is not near as comfortable as the DFs res C handle. The rubber handle on the Golok is surprisingly comfortable.

The Cold Steel Gurkha had just the slightest edge over the DF in chopping, but that handle just wouldn't let me go too long with it. In the real world of work, the Dog Father is better.

The DF is still the king of my chopping bowies.

So here is how they ended up: Your results may be different. These are just my impressions and this is not a scienticfic comparison at all.

I really need to find some more wood. Great, the storm blew this dead pine down!

I don't really feel like chopping any more today. Its time for beer.
