out of the chpoices listed, i chose 6" blade, 4" handle.

Four by four, the smallest of the options. Plenty big to baton down some saplings for shelter; with the help of wedges can split open anything you care to point it at; small enough to do fine carving for fire making, wooden tools, traps. Big knives are handy, but you're not really going to want to carry one all the time, which is a necessary attribute of a survival knife.

yea but i'm used to carrying an axe everywhere in the woods.....big knives to me feel like lightweight plastic picnic knives....and i usually have 4 - 10 folders, and 4- 6 fixed blades on me anyways,...... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I chose 6" with 4" handle but would prefer a 4.5" handle. I just think the extra inches will give you some chopping advantages and more edge to work with.

I voted for 4x4. I always carry a knife that size, usually in pocket or belt. If I carry a larger knife at all, it is in my pack (that would be my SR battlerat). I am much more likely to carry a small axe (Granfors Bruks wildlife hatchet) than a big knife though, cuz it is way easier/efficient to chop with a good axe than a knife.
The thing is, it has to be *convenient* to carry even if you don't expect to need it (I also carry a folder for most routine cutting chores), but big *enough* to get most survival work done and a 4" blade works great in that role. 4" handle is enough, that is why I like that handle size.

If I am limited to one blade, and one blade only I would have to say a 4" blade with a 5" handle. I can baton, make pretty much anything I need like a spear, get wood for a fire and basic shelter, and I can still use it to dress game. Now, I don't want to think about not having more than one blade though.
