To sum up the project they said: "
"Far below the Black Hills of South Dakota, crews are building the world's deepest underground science lab at a depth equivalent to more than six Empire State buildings — a place uniquely suited to scientists' quest for mysterious particles known as dark matter. Scientists, politicians and other officials gathered Monday for a groundbreaking of sorts at a lab 4,850 foot below the surface of an old gold mine that was once the site of Nobel Prize-winning physics research."
"Physicists have said that without dark matter, galaxies might never have formed. By learning more about dark matter, they hope to understand better whether the universe is expanding or contracting."
"The research team will try to catch the ghostly particles in a 300-kilogram tank of liquid xenon, a cold substance that is three times heavier than water. If they tried to detect dark matter above ground, the highly sensitive detector would be bombarded by cosmic radiation."
"Scientists hope to start construction on the two deepest labs by 2012 and open them by 2016. The projects are expected to cost $550 million." <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />
And if after the 550 Million dollars plus over-runs are spent and the 300Kg. tank remains empty....fill the hole with cement and walk away? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />
I'm all for creating jobs but THIS is redicolous!
The outcome of the experiment will not help the world as we know it today or as it will be when project is finished.
Sheding light on a expanding or non expanding universe is mute.
Our lifespan is 77.6 years. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

I disagree. Luckily for the human race, attitudes like yours have not historically won out, as we wouldn't have computers if people didn't "waste time and money" studying esoteric topics like quantum physics, and we wouldn't have satellite communication if not for the "useless" drive to reach into space, and we wouldn't be typing messages on this forum if not for the hypertext transfer protocol developed at CERN while searching for subatomic particles that had no perceived way to "help the world as we know it today". Our drive to advance our understanding of the world around us is what sets us apart from animals. There is nothing more important. I'd certainly rather spend the money on a half-billion dollar research laboratory than on an auto company that was driven into the ground by mismanagement.

Actually, I'd rather spend a half billion dollars on LOTS of things, instead of the crap our government has been spending our money on lately.
I'd rather buy a half billion people ice cream cones than give the money to failing banks who dug themselves into holes with sleazy trading practices <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Why not make it a $549 million project and just slide a scant $1 million to me? I'm sure nobody would notice. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
or...
Better yet - Halvezies: Make it a $225 million project and slide the rest to me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Ya know, we've been spending so much time talking about the science and the cost of funding such a project, that we've completely ignored something else, that's far more important....
THE ZOMBIES <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />
Good thing our Waki's will be out by the time they complete the facility. I just wish I had two Killa Zilla's so I could dual-wield them, Milla Jovovich style <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I'm not all that smart, still having problems dealing with Quarks <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />. The internet and web browsers were invented at CERN? I thought Al Gore invented it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> I understand that RAID has come out with a new spray to get rid of Quarks. You might want to check it out LOL DAN
