I think it's worth carrying a small hammock (some are only a pound or less!) just for recreation! You can sleep in your tent, but during the day at camp the hammock is so nice, it's worth the very little extra weight! I carry both my camping hammock to sleep in and the Trek Light for lounging during the day. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Here's a pic of my Trek Light double hammock. This was last Saturday at Yuba Lake in Levan, UT. It was a chilly morning. I had it rigged out between the bed of a pickup and the rope tower of a ski boat.

I just ordered an Eno double nest with the bug guard. I cannot wait to kick back on a hammock.

So, I get the box from REI and I was like, "Man this hammock system packs small, and it's light!!!"

Yeah, they're not THAT light!

But they are pretty awesome. I carry a lightweight one when I go on day hikes.

I've heard it said that a lightweight hammock is the "eleventh essential".

Well, I made one! With the help of the wife and mother. It is basically just a nylon sheet gathered at the ends but it is very comfy.

I've been doing all my camping in Costa Rica the last couple years with a Hammock Bliss No See Um No More. http://www.hammockbliss.com/No_See_Um_No_More.html Its awesome for the jungle or the beach when there are a million different kinds of insects, crabs, lizards, snakes, and Dog only knows what else crawling around. Also crazy precipitation.

I'm wondering what you hammockers do with your gear to keep it safe and dry on a backpacking trip?
