I'd like to see a .275" if it is a 4" blade. In a true 3.0" blade, I wouldn't want something that thick. 3/16" would still be real stout on a 3"

because its nice having that indestructable "small" (the biggest 4" knife I've ever had though!) blade, as you really never know when you might need it.

I think Dice nailed it. It needs to be indestructable. And discrete.

I would say .200 at the spine, flat ground. Black Res-C handle that was wider top to bottom to make it "flatter" for carry. Black blade, no logo. Approximately the HRLM blade shape with a decent belly but enough of a point for opening boxes, etc. Black lanyard fastener.

My 2 bits.

I trust Dan though - whatever he designs will most likely serve all of us well!

But a 3" 3/16 would be nice!

I don't think you would need it to be that thick. Given the performance of say SR-77 the blade would be plenty tough at say .125" and would probably slice better than the thicker one.

Yeah, but I like indestructable fixed blades. I have some light weight folders and my RAT3 that cover the slicing jobs - I want my SY EDC to be tough as nails!

I think it makes a heck of a ot more sense to spend 250$ on a 3 or 4 inch EDC you carry and use every day than a chopper you use once or twice a month. As far as I am concerned the SS4 is the perfect EDC but if you want or need something smaller possibly for legal reasons a D2 Rat 3 is exellent. I would not want an EDC made of SR77 though because while the steel is perfect for big knives I want something that has a bit more edge and I would be willing to give up some toughness for it.
Fallkniven S1 is an exellent choice if you missed out on the SS4. I think evryone who carries a knife daily should spend the most cash on the knife they use the most. I really like the way the Sihk's carry a knife. They have one knife and have it with them always as a part of their religeon and it helps define themselves as warriors. The movie 300 was about the battle at Thermople but the Sihks have had a battle that was considered the Sihk version in the late 1800's when less than 30 sihks fighting on the side of the british held off over 1000 Pathans (Taliban)for several days and died to a man rather than surrender.

Given the blade thickness of the knives Dan has produced to date, I can't imagine him ever manufacturing a blade less than 3/16" thick, Bors. But I wouldn't complain if he did. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Good point he does design things to survive anything. I would not complain either if he made a thick bladed folder. I would be more interested in the locking design since that can be a weak point.

Unsub,
I'm not convinced that a $250 knife for EDC is a good value. My EDC's all cost less $140 most less than $60 and they work great. In some cases they even use the same type of steel as the high end ones. Their not as fancy but they get the job done and if I break or loose it no big deal.

I am very interested in this post and here are some of my jumbled thoughts. I too value the investment value of a Busse but cannot bring myself to use my Battle Mistress. ( I couldn't use my 25-5 Randall either so I sold it) I also cannot bring myself to EDC a pistol AND a fixed blade so Spyderco folders do EDC for me. I did not like the handle of the Ontario folder at all, it felt way to blocky. I like relatively thin 3-4 inch fixed blades for hunting though. The HRLM is nice but I have to say that I prefer ResC and I can't wait to see the Scrapper4 I have on the way (also on the lookout for an old Bog Dog!). I never bought any off the Busse basics back when they first came out because I thought the 3 and 5 inch were way too thick. I would like to see a thin ATS34 (or comparable stainless) Scrapper with ResC with the same 3-4" blade shape as the game warden. When I am hunting I never chop anything so 3-4" and a saw is usually all I need for Ohio. I havn't handled a game warden but I like the shape of the blade. Don't know if it will ever happen but I would buy several.

Thanks for the thoughts on the RAT folder - I hope the American made version improves on that, if and when it comes out.

General responses and questions...

I love my RAT3 and carry it often.

VIC - how do you like that RAT folder? I didn't get one because they're imported.
It is nice, but the thumb stud placement is a little awkward for me. I prefer my CS Voyager. BTW: See Jeff's post on his forum. They are discontinuing imports at Ont/RAT. Everything to be US made. New US folder?

By the way, thanks for the update Vic. I didn't even notice that sticky thread last time I was in there. I'm looking forward to its release!
