i am majorly pissed and in desperate need of a distraction.

Know much about computers, laptops specifically?

i'm semi up on computers. i was a major geek a few years ago but technology changes and i haven't been keepin up.

I am fed up with messing with a used one and the last new one I bought (HP) from Circuit City was crap. On a budget of 500 bucks what is there. All I do is type papers, surf the net, email, occasional movie. I am not a gammer, I don't do music. What would you guys suggest?

For $500 you should be able to find something wicked if all you need is the basics.

Check some after Christmas sales at Best Buy and such.

My dad uses his machine for the same kinds of things, but he's thinking of switching to Mac. May be a bit overkill for just sending a few emails from time to time.

I've been happy with my Mac for years, but I use it to make money, so the cost was worth it to me.

i'm sure you've noticed the netbook craze, and some designers have used the same engines to power desktops by adding one or two features like graphics cards or an optical drive. i like the asus and acer varieties, which add some graphics processing power, but since you say "occasional movie" i have to direct you to something with an optical drive.
