I spent a few weeks just outside Denver, in an unincorporated area of Adams County, near Henderson, this last Summer. Denver is pretty nice, as far as big cities go (though, admittedly, I don't get along well in big cities).

Why did you move to the Denver area?

My girl took a job out here, and we are both rock climbers so it's just an awesome place to live. I was ready for a career change too, and there's a variety of interesting stuff to do out here, so it was an easy decision.

I'll tell you as soon as I find a job <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I was working in academia, and hated the environment - no respect, long hours, low pay, and no job security for the first ten or so years of your career. I am basically looking for anything OUTSIDE academia right now, I'm leaving it wide open.

There's only so much you can do with a PhD in physics, though <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

I don't agree. There's a lot you can do, even if not all of it is obvious.

Most people end up working within careers that have little to do with their original training. My ex got a degree in botany and a degree in art history (which, by the way, is pretty much how I fell into my job), and then – after working for a few years as a biologist – she went back to school and became a medical doctor. The other closest woman in my life got her degree in theater arts, and now she is an accountant. My Pa got his degree in math, and became a software engineer. My photo buddy got his degree in geology, then became a Pulitzer prize winning journalist.

Then there's self-employment: When I became a pro photographer, I just decided to do it, and did it. That is the way it is for most folks who own their own businesses.
