Hey Evolute.
I love the pics you posted the other evening. The seals were something else. I sure would hate to have a bull get a hold of me!
They can be dangerous
Leopard seals hunt primarily warm blooded animals and a few years ago an American scientist working on a project in Antartica was attacked and killed by one.
This past summer in North Vancouver we had a seal jump out of the water and grab a child by the wrist and dragged her into the water as her and her dad were walking on a dock. They figure the only thing that saved the girl was that she was wearing a life jacket that pulled her up.

These animals are wild and should be treated as such

I agree. I hope my close shots of them don't give the false impression that getting close to them is safe. It's not.

Saw some attacks from deer, elk, and bears. Will have to look up the seals.
A few years ago my wife's uncle was almost killed by a bull moose, the only thing that saved him was he was able to roll into a large depression under a fallen tree.
As it was he had some broken ribs, concussion, bruises all over his body and various other damages.
After it left he was able to limp out to the road on his snow mobile, (passed out a few times on the way from shock and blood loss). When a passing car found him he was outcold slumped over the handlebars of his snow mobile

Moose scare me more then bears do

No you just have to give them the space and respect that they deserve

One of the all time great uses of a terrifying beast in movie history

I have been very lucky with moose. They don't seem to care about me when I'm in my kayak. I have had them walk up to me with a calf and get upset with people taking pictures 100 yards away. I avoid them during the rut.

Just a quick question on telephoto lenses
what magnification is a 200mm or 300mm lense on a DSLR

With a 35 mm system, a 200 mm lens is 4 power and a 300 mm lens is 6 power.

I've never had an issue with either bears or moose(unless they got away during hunting season). I've only had 2 concerning events with bears (both times grizzly) and once with a moma moose with a baby.

The funny thing is the only time I ever thought I was going to have to shoot an animal in self defense, it was a nasty old bull that some rancher left out on crown land.
