When my ex was hiking the PCT, a bear in Kearsarge Pass bit the foot of her sleeping bag (with her in it), and ran off into the night with her sleeping bag, and with her sock right off of her foot!
My ex – being the super-tough, awesome woman she is – ran after the bear and took her sleeping bag and sock back from the bear! She's lucky, night time attacks especially by black bears are almost always predatory

My great grandfather was reportedly killed and partially eaten by a grizzly while prospecting in the Yukon.
I say reportedly because although his body was found partially eaten by bears the only witness was his partner.
This partner was hung a few years later for killing a new partner after they found gold on their claim

^ your family still got a placer claim up there? No that happened long before my dad was born, iirc my grandmother was 13 or 14 when it happened which would place it around 1912/1913
