Those have been around forever and most will out shoot the Ruger 10/22 standard versions. If you just want a good, reliable, inexpensive, accurate .22 semi-auto, and aren't worried about accessories, the Marlin Model 60 is a good choice.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Yes to the 10/22. Also, The GSG .22 is a nice rifle, looks tactical, and has a good rep. Made in Germany (German Sports Gun), kinda looks like an HK MP-5. They have a few models I believe. One looks like an AK. They run around $500.00, but most seem to think they're worth it.

+1 on the GSG. You can find them for less than $500 too!

Don't forget Henry's version of the AR-7!

I like that AR-7. Nice backpack rifle. Need a rabbit for the stew, one quick shot.

One of my Buds has one and it's easy to assemble, easy to shoot, and easy to disassemble...exactly what a survival weapon should be.

Glenfield was made by Marlin, and was marketed as Glenfield for one of the store chains--just can't remember which one. The Model 60 is a great rifle, but tend to be problematic if not kept clean. I bought more than a few from pawnshops while I was in college and fixed them up.

Thank you all very much!
I am learning.
Have to take a look at that Marlin 60.
That survival gun looks great too.
Thanks for the links,I didnt realize there were so many
aftermarket mods for these things.
Are those 200 dollar barrels for the 10/22 really worth it,
or is it just cuz they look cool?
Old friend once told me while we were in the bait store,
"5% of this is for the fish,95 percent is for the fisherman!"
Maybe much of those parts fall into that category?

If you want a great breakdown rifle forget the ar-7, find yourself a Springfield M-6 Scout, now thats a good backpack gun.

Check one out here with mods http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/v-shrake/m6.html

Maybe I can get pics of mine up soon.

The add-on barrels bring a variety of options. There are ultralight weight carbon fiber and aluminum barrels (with steel rifling), there a number of length choices from 16" on up, there are number of barrel profile choices (for example .920" barrels and stocks to match) and even colors if you're into that. Most important for me was the ability to get a match quality chamber on a high quality barrel.

That said, for casual shooting the stock barrel works just fine. There are even gunsmiths that will tune the stock barrel (set back and rechamber) if you want to stay with the stock look and feel.

Probably the most important mod you can make on a 10/22 is to tune the trigger.

Please don't take this comment wrong as I don't mean to be disagreeable, but you should at least carefully consider other cartridges/calibers if the primary purpose for this firearm is home security.

That said, I have carried only a .22LR handgun or rifle many, many times in the past.

Other great takedowns include the Marlin 70PSS and the Taurus (formerly Rossi) Model 62(.22LR) or 72(.22WMR). For more money and total weight, AR uppers are available in .22LR. The NEF/H&R single shots are simple & take down easily but are heavier.

I think it was Montgomery Ward, but you are right. I never had any problems with my Model 60, but I did clean it on occcasion. It it the largest selling 22 rifle in the world. Marlins are usually quite accurate. I usually had to work on my Rugers to get the accuracy that Marlins have right out of the box. Of course, the expensive target model Ruger 22s shoot very well. I still think that Marlin offers the best 22 for the money, but like many, I just love the Ruger 10/22 for its feel and that great rotary magazine.
