Victorinox "Hiker" Swiss Army knife (because it was inexpensive and has a wood saw.) Hopefully he'll carry a better knife, but this is a good backup.



Silva thermo-comp. Again, he should carry a proper compass, but this is a great spare.



ITW whistle (also from County Comm). This thing is LOUD!

ARES SO LED (County Comm) makes a great back up head lamp. I've even clipped it to the side of my glasses!

Also included an Aquamira Frontier water filter straw, some first aid supplies, 25 ft of 550 cord and a bandanna.

He ended up paying about $130 for the whole thing. I know I paid more for everything in mine, but mine is in a Maxped FR-1, so that tripled the pouch cost right there. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

I'd carry this one, it's a good kit, with great quality items.

That's a cool kit, Joe. Your sister-in-law took some very nice pics, too. I am way behind, and mine won't have the same stuff. I am working on one to fit in my new Maxpedition water bottle holder. Mine is more geared to suburban survival than wilderness survival. More defense related.

I've been carrying the Maxpedition Colossus for a couple of years now and it's my "City Survival Kit".

There are no reviews on Youtube of that bag, so I keep feeling tempted to do one.

I'm a little shy to do video reviews, but I think I'll do a pictorial for you guys here.

Hey Joe- great job <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> !! You might want to consider one of those bright orange trash bags instaed of the space blanket. The space blankets are not all that good in ceratin situations- whereas the bright orange ( thick) trash bags - block wind- rain and hold your body heat ( and great signal of distress). Also- I carry lil waterproff containes with cotton balls with vaseline ( petroleum jelly) worked into them. REI also has a storm match that holds up in wind and rain just in case hands are too cold for firesteel <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />. Nice work. I have been slowly putting mine together. I have read so much about what people put in them I have a hard time limiting myself.

Great little kit...looks like you have everything covered in your kit too. I was going to say some first aid items, but I do see some bandaides and guaze pads so it looks great. I need to get mine together as well.

Here is a link to the cheapie trash bags I was talking about. I think they are actually used by the road dept in Colorado. Great review and pics. Mine is way large, need to get my rear in gear and get a smaller one put together.

On the trash sack, great insulator for keeping body heat in, can be made into trail markers, collect rain water, and like already said--pretty visible from a distance.

great kit, might i suggest stuffing in about ten (10) PJCB (petroleum jelly cotton balls) into the kit? you basically put a bit of vasiline on a cotton ball, smush it in well, and they pack down small in a little plastic bag. Yo use them you fluff one open and spark it. Lights in the rain to, andlights with very small amiount of spark.

I need to try that, heard about it, seen it done, just never did it myself.
