I am seeing several different colors of blade coating. Is the only difference in these the color or are they different coatings? Also I like the Double Cut Dumpster Mutt but I am not sure how the face of the blade is finished. Is Double Cut a rougher non reflective surface or it is some chemical reaction or coating on the blade?
3- Purchase protection If I buy a knife that has a paper cover with inspected by sticker from Scrap Yard can I be sure I am getting the "real deal"?
I run a Dog Club/Park and train large dogs in protection, police work....I roam 12 wooded acres just about every day and would like to have a tough, work horse knife. Am I in the right place?
Your assistance is greatly appreciated,
Mick

Hey Mick and Welcome!
Scrap Yard offers several different coatings and some double-cut and satin finishes. They don't offer every knife in every blade finish though. I think you can still order the S5 LE which is satin finished. Double-cut is a non reflective rougher satin finish - sort of like bead blasted to around 320/400.
Read the sticky thread at the top of the forum to see how their selling method works. The Dumpster Mutts must be bought off the secondary market as they aren't available any longer through Scrap Yard.
If you buy it from Scrap Yard it is authentic...If you buy it off of bladeForum you can feel pretty safe. I have never seen any fake Scrap Yards anywhere including E-Bay. Swamp Rat and Busse are more expensive knives made by the same folks. They are all excellent knives.
you are definitely in the right place.

The double cut is a bead blasted finish. LEs are usually a satin finish, and the colored ones are the crinkle coat finish. I have never seen a counterfeit Scrap Yard knife, and I've been here from day one. Yes, you're in the right place. Superior price to performance ratio. Click the link in my sig for more useful links.

The coatings are the same just different colors - although some are rougher and others smoother...for example, the gray seems to be smoother and the black rougher. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the yard Mick. You are definitely in the right place for tough work horse knives. Scrap Yard has one of the best price to performance ratios you'll find.
For the most part, the only real difference between blade coatings is their color. However, some coatings will be different from others - one may be more durable, or smoother, meaning it would tend to get less gunk stuck to it if cutting sappy wood or something.
For Double Cut, it's not actually a coating at all - the blade is bead blasted with two different sizes/types of media - hence double cut, cut once with one media, then again with another. It is definitely rougher and less reflective than a satin finish.
As far as purchasing, that's always the toughest part - since the knives are released in limited time runs, it's sometimes hard to get your hands on older models. Your best bet is to watch the Busse/Swamp Rat/Scrapyard Knives for Sale board at bladeforums.com. OR you could buy the scrapper 5 LE, which is available right now from Scrap Yard, at factory prices (most Scrap Yard knives sell for more than original price on the second hand market)

Welcome Mick. You are TOTALLY in the right place. There are nothing but the tough, workhorse knives you are searching for at Scrap Yard. All of the Bussekin for that matter. I believe the Scrapper 5 Limited Editions are still for sale made from the INFI (Busse Combat proprietary steel). You can't go wrong there. Price to performance ratio really is amazing for anything coming out of the Scrap Yard.

Wow,
What a warm and friendly group I have stumbled across here. Thanks for the welcomes and advice.
Apparently I somehow managed to chop out the first part of my post. I was trying to figure out if there were significant differences between the SR101, SR77, INFI steels. I thought a blade without coating might be better for me as I cook out for larger numbers of people regularly and may be using the knife on: butts, brisket, ribs, chickens and occasionally a whole pig. I thought the coatings might hold food to the blade and increase resistance to slicing. To tell the truth though, normally, I just pull the meat off the bones by hand. So maybe a coating to prevent rust and staining would be more beneficial?
To be honest, I would also like to have a knife that in a dire emergency I could use to defend my person against a large dog/coyote bent on my destruction. I frequently end up trying to help people with dogs that no one else will work with. I am pretty good at understanding and avoiding risky situations but I also know that there is no predicting what some dogs have picked up from us humans. Worse, we believe a team of coyotes took out a large dog belonging to friends across the road recently. The dog had started a personal campaign against the growing population of coyotes.
I found a couple Dumpster Mutts and a few Scrapper 5's for sale. I was a little confused by the fact that apparently Scrap Yard only makes and offers for sale one knife at a time. I see the one knife Scrap Yard is apparently about to make and offer for sale. Does one put a deposit down and wait for the knife to get made? Are there options when buying a new production knife? It says everyone might not get one, does this mean even if I make a deposit I will have to wait and see if they make enough for me to get one? Any idea how long it takes to get delivery on a "new run" knife? I'm about to turn 60, and my wife is a red head....no telling how long I have left!
Shees, I have more questions than my clients do, maybe even more than my daughter!

Most people won’t be able to tell too much difference between the 3 steels. SR-77 is really tough, but doesn’t hold an edge quite as well as SR-101. SR-101 isn’t “weak” though, it’s PLENTY tough for most people. INFI is the best all around with greatest corrosion resistance, but is usually marginal performance increase for a much higher price. It’s good for when you don’t want to worry about keeping it oiled so much, and want the best and don’t care what it costs. Any knife that the Busse family makes will serve you well in any situation. They’re far superior to anything you’ve probably ever used. If you want a knife for food prep and not worry about rust, you might want to check out the 154 CM knives. Otherwise, you could strip the coating off a coated blade, and just keep it oiled. You don’t need to put a deposit down on a knife. You order it on the page if it’s for sale, and they’ll bill you in a couple months when it’s ready. Check this sticky for a lot of ordering answers: READ THIS! Rules & SY Info (Updated: 08-11-11)

Welcome Mick. As far as the difference between the Bussekin steels, you will probably get 3 different answers with several different justifications for each. Coatings do prevent rust but I tend to use non coated blades (LE) for cooking. I like them all and use a different steel for the occasion at hand. Bottom line, my answer is yes.
I don't doubt any Bussekin blade for defense, but I would not doubt a Tramontina machete, a steel barrel pen or a Springer .45 for that matter so not sure my opinion counts much...
As far as what's for sale when, that's the learning curve. Embrace it and enjoy the company. Welcome to the Yard.
