People are still kicking themselves for not getting the first.

The mudder grips/handle is one of the most comfortable grips I've ever handled.
not the prettiest but fits like a glove, all size paws/hands.

It's INFI, a super steel that really resists corrosion, one guy here tested it in a bucket of
sea/salt water and it showed no signs of rust. (Paul the Brit)
it will work great for what you want.

but SR 77 is a SY staple and SR 101 (SwampRat staple) are wonderful too,
good enough for all of us (and less expensive). All have a lifetime warranty
(the blade, not the original owner) and they honor it brother,
great company with great products.

You may be realizing 1) What a great forum you have stumble on and 2) That it's pretty hard to go wrong with any Busse Kin steel. You have come at a great time and I sugges that you do get in on the Srapper 5 LE. I think it a execellent knife for what you are wanting. Even of you decide to invest in other models you will never regret purchasing a release directly from one of the companies.

Hang around and see what goes on with the Blade West releases. Very interesting knives are on the way...

yep the current knife offered is a great all around blade.... and hard to pass up.

i wouldnt think twice about my s5cg if i had to use it for defence but just general work...

The Scrapper 5 is an awesome blade. Not sure how it would go as a defence knife against dogs, as I'm not sure how you scientifically attack a dog with a knife.

I guess if you need to stab deep (.e.g. need to penetrate into a deep canine chest) it may not be the best choice due to the blade length and it similarly would not be so good for a chopping attacks on the CNS/circulatory system (e.g. chopping of a head or a limb ).

However if stabbing to 3-5" and slashing attacks are acceptable then I'd say it would do fine.
I'd have no fear about failure and SR101 and INFI both take and hole fine edges.

The LE is Satin INFI, so you won't need to worry about coating and food and is pretty good re corrosion resistance - pretty much the premier Bussekin steel.
And in my mind the S5 has mighty pretty lines.
So if you decide the S5 design is suitable for your needs, then you chose the right time to join the 'Yard!

Welcome to the Yard, Mick. The Scrapper 5 that is available now is expensive for a Scrapper, but satin finished INFI is the reason for that. You won't find another 5" satin finished INFI blade for a price that low. It's all about the steel. Get one, if you can.

No deposit required and if you pay by credit card, you aren't charged until they ship it to you. Knives are usually available for 4-6 weeks then taken down and shipped 4-6 weeks after that. So, the process can require some patience. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> The LE's are a little different and I doubt they all are available for that long.
As others have recommended, I also HIGHLY recommend you get the Scrapper 5 LE that is currently available if you can swing it. It will do what you need it to do and you won't have to worry about coatings or corrosion. Two other great knives that are stainless and would work for the meat prep part are the Scrap Muk and the Bird Dog but you would have to find one on the secondary market. You know, if a new guy went to the SYKCO site looking to buy a knife and clicked on knives, he would not see the Scrapper 5 or Scrapper 5 LE. All he would see are older models no longer available. Of course, if he then clicked on "Place Order", the only knife that would come up is the S5LE. It's nice to have the pictures and specs of older models, but that would likely confuse a new customer to no end. Thanks again for helping to get me educated.

The knife for sale here looks like a good option. I had been thinking about a Dumpster Mutt or older Scrapper 5s which are probably functionally very similar but not as nice. I like the flat ground blade on the Dumpster and the different blade style on the current offering put me off a little at first. I actually just placed my order. So I guess I can start being irritating about delivery dates.

I have a Randall made #16 SP#1, "Special #1 Fighter" that I have owned for 30-40 years. It is just too big a knife to carry around for ED. I am about to look into a more practical carry system for it but I can't imagine wearing it regularly. The stainless that it is made from probably does not compare to the high carbon steels for normal use either. I think a 5"-5.5" blade will be a practical ED carry size that I might actually wear ED. I have tried various pocket knives but my pockets stay stuffed with dog toys, treats, iPhone... pocket clip knives just seem to be in the way. My latest ED, Benchmade Nitrous Stryker, has been opening up in my pocket regularly, due I imagine to all the dogs pawing me and the constant flow of a wide range of things in and out of my pockets.

Which brings me to carry systems, probably for the back of my right hip, but something I can easily move around. I have been thinking about a Molded Kydex sheath with some form of, maybe mole, system. I am wondering if Kydex is rougher on a knife, particularly a Resiprene C handle. Again I plan to actually wear this knife in a very active, dog filled environment, ED. Does Scrap Yard usually offer a sheath once they start shipping knives? I have heard the name Rainwalker Creations mentioned. Should I be able to pick up a sheath here without sending the knife in? How would you guys house this knife if you planned to wear it in a very active environment, ED?

I have seen a great many versions of the Scrapper 5 in various places. Maybe some Scrap Yard fans are thinking of upgrading to the latest model. Would I be correct in assuming that all the knives Scrap Yard will make in this run will be like the one in the order area, LEs with satin finishes and the grind that does not quite flatten the entire side of the blade?

kydex... especialy around dogs.... the res-c is very close to kong toys i would say as far as durability.... but much stiffer it should do fine with kydex most of mine are in kydex. i believe mashed cat makes a fairly good s5 that you wont have to send in , rain walker makes great sheaths but it takes some time. worth the wait...
