Wow, 154CM is kicking butt. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Didn't expect that really...

I expected everyone to pick Infi or SR-101. I picked 154CM, I just didn't expect the majority to do so.

I am new to the Busse steel game and do not own one yet.. That is until the Waki and S5LE ship. But I do own most of the other types of steel that knives are made from and I would also vote for 154CM it takes a wicked sharp edge and keeps it along time. It is just about as stain resistant as you can get which is very important for a neck knife or one that could be put back wet. For a neck type knife you shouldnt be prying on anything or opening cans of stew. It is a delicate knife in my opinion. With an edge holding first kinda attitude. NOT beat on stuff and keep from breaking attitude. Sharpens very easy on the brown and white spydie stones.

Interesting that 154CM did so well, It seems to have fallen behind steels like D2 and especially S30V recently. I have been researching more pocket type knives in recent years which may be the reason I see more other steels. I see that steels like S30V are "powder made" steels. I'm not sure what that means? I am guessing it has to do with a faster manufacturing process.

I assume that all the Busse knives get a similar heat treating cycle. If that is the case then I imagine the steels they choose respond well to their preferred tempering process. Does 154CM seem to respond especially well to Busse heat treating?

Hot for some Busse 154CM,

Mick

Powdered steel is formed in process that helps creat even carbide distribution. It makes some majical stuff.

Swamp rat used s30v in the rat trap. I do not have one but would love to. s30v, in my experience, is pretty good stuff, but not a steel that I would pound on. It will get scary sharp and hold it there for a long time, providing you don't cut any hard stuff, then the edge will start to chip.

I put a micro small chip in an s30v blade from cutting off a small fish head. And another from hitting a small metel band on a box. I wont say the makers name, but the knife I am referring to failed Noss's test very early. A test that INFI and SR77 went way beyond and in the case of SR77, cost about a third as much.

Another knife, again maker unnamed, made from s30v, did quite well in the same test. Maybe it was geometry or something I am not aware of, but it made me want to toss a $300 knife in the river.

I am pretty much done shopping for a blade that comes from anywhere but Wauson. Everything else is either over priced, or plain junk. I dont have an INFI yet, but maybe at Knob Creek........
