Or, if you wanted to be a little more conventional, you could just purchase a ceramic knife sharpener like I did. They work great to keep the kitchen cutlery functioning well. Be careful though, sisters parents and friends may start asking you over, then at the last moment mention that you might want to bring your knife sharpener.
Hmm I feel another post topic itching my finger tips,

Yep, I mostly use my Spyderco SharpMaker (with extra fine rods) and it works great.

I have a set of ceramic sticks that work pretty well. I think they were made by smith. I have heard some good stuff about the spyderco sharpmaker but have never tried one. I am realy sold on using the sand paper. I do much better with that than just a stone. I dont have alot invested in stones so the sand paper is a bit more economical right now. When a sheet starts to clog up, I wipe it down with a wet rag to keep it going for a little longer. The 2000 grit has realy put a nice edge on the ol'mutt for now. It's almost an obsesive hobby to see just how sharp I can get it. I have to live up to the name, right?

Yeah. I like it. I got mine for like $40 on BF. It sharpens anything. Plain edge, serrated, combo edge, needles, fish hooks, darts, whatever. Spyderco SharpmakerSpyderco got their start making sharpeners in the 70's. It wasn't until later that they started making knives.

My dad used to use the bottom of a coffee cup sometimes. I have never tried it but I am sure it would work in a pinch. Just make sure it's an unglazed portion. You can also roll down your window in your car and used the top edge of the tempered glass to sharpen/strop your edge. I don't think I will try this while driving down the freeway, cell phone in one hand, sharp knife in the other stroping it on my car window might now end well

But if you try the coffee cup one make sure you empty it before sharpening with the bottom. Hot coffee in the lap is no good, just ask McDonald's

I used ceramic stones and am pretty alright at sharpening most things with them, but it was when I finally bought a strop and black/green compound I got stuff really sharp.
As was stated above, and what you found out yourself, is that less pressure is the way to go. In fact the knife's own weight is usually enough.

Of course not! Use a Bluetooth earpiece so you have one hand to steer with.
