We get lots of newbies, I see the new names in the section that says "welcome our newest member..." and many don't post (at least not right away) or are seldom heard from.
Some are probably checking things out, or looking for the next offering, all cool.
The Challenge Coin was for members who contributed to the Yard and made JYD status, like a thank you for your contributions and loyalty; and newbies, hogs, rats whoever couldn't just get one, you had to earn it with 1000 posts.
If it is too easy to get a Patch, some (and more) will just come for the freebie and we'll never hear from them again, and that's fine but it seems Dan is thanking all those in the Yard who made it a great place to hang, learn, share, make friends, contributing and making it over 300,000 posts.
Whatever is decided I think is cool and support it, and I thank Dan again for being generous to the Yard
thats a true possibility, and maybe its just me but i just dont see why someone would wanna get a patch for something they arent really a part of...
i just dont see myself like, joining lets say a HK forum just to get an HK patch..im not a huge fan of HK nor do i own any of their products...just seems silly.
Youre probably right though, may become one of those "if you build it they will come" type things . People will take it just because its free.
...sad world we have nowadays
I agree with all of the above.
But, in the end, from Dan's perspective, a Scrap Yard patch is good marketing and advertising as well. So, I don't think he would or should want to make a "Standard" Scrap Yard patch "Too" hard to achieve. But, if it is to be "Free", I think it still needs to be earned a bit. So, along that thinking, (and assuming posts are worthy) I think 100 - 200 posts actually seems reasonable to earn a Basic Scrap Yard "Free" patch.
If much less worthy "Death Race" posts are part of the equation, I would vote for 300 - 500.
IMO and as mentioned, most people that contribute only 10 posts or so, are just checking in and not really trying to participate or become part of the Yard.
So, why would they even want a patch.
Personally, if I were Dan, I wouldn't want to hand out "Free" patches too readily. For those who don't have some "Skin in the game", "FREE" is too easily and too often taken for granted. A free patch without really taking some time to earn it and "Appreciate" what it is for, might be too high a risk to end up in the trash or similarly wasted and un-appreciated = No return value to Dan for providing them for free. If I were Dan, even from a marketing view, I would want to feel that at least a Large majority of patches I were sending out would be appreciated.
50 posts is borderline, but "assuming" that the posts are ligit interactive posts rather than Death Race posts, then even 50 posts is arguably something worthwhile. But, if counting 50 Death Race posts, then not so much.
In "most" cases, with 100 posts, a Dog has generally at least interacted enough with the forum and fellow dogs to learn about Scrap Yard and the Yard forum and appreciate a few things about the knives and company and so on. And hopefully at least contributed a bit on the forums.

*** Maybe, if trying to keep numbers reasonable, just requesting that there be an "Honorable" attempt to provide at least a "majority" of posts as true interaction/participation type posts - as opposed to meaningless Death Chat (Race) posts. - Not to try to question or account for individuals actions. Just a request for some honor in the attempts to keep post counts "Meaningful" based on participate and true interaction. [/color]
I voted for 100.
BUT, my vote for 100 is based on the "hope" that some disclaimer is added along the lines of the request above - something as simple as requesting that: "Honor" in validity and value/worth of posts is requested, accepted and appreciated.
Short of that, I guess I would vote for 300 - maybe even 500 and let the Death Chat's go crazy. Some people really enjoy the spirit of the Death Chat races. - Fair enough. But, I would want higher numbers (300 - 500) if this is the game.
Obviously, (in most cases) more posts equals more effort and contributions. But, getting to 200 - 300 does take a LOT of time and effort - especially if meaningful posts. - But, 300 isn't even that easy to achieve even if making silly non-worthy 5 word posts for a few hours on the Death Chat.
Most of us JYD's are just a bit sick/crazy for spending so much time posting so much to get "THOUSANDS" of posts.
But, I still have to feel JYD status is something special and deserved and earned. So, I would like to see two different patches. A Basic Forum / Scrap Yard appreciation patch. - Good for feeling part of Scrap Yard and good marketing.
And maybe a higher level - JYD Patch. Earned appreciation patch for JYD's.
I don't know if it is feasable or worth the hassle for Dan to order two different patches. But, along the lines of the Challenge coin, I personally feel there is "Warranted" and justified appreciation for being a JYD.
Because of hassle and cost, I don't know if JYD #'s should be messed with or not. I would of course appreciate having my JYD # on a patch probably even more than I care about numbers on a knife. But, I can appreciate the hassle and I don't really need the number. So, I don't know that I would feel the hassle is worth it. Especially considering the ongoing new JYD's and such. On the other hand, having your JYD # helps prevent Casual trading of patches (???) - as the number (especially on a coin or patch) has more symbolic meaning.
JYD # or not (????), if a couple of hundred JYD patches were purchased (enough to cover a couple years worth of future JYD's ????), then as JYD status is reached by new JYD's, a new JYD could "Then" request to upgrade to that patch - for a reasonable "Upgrade" (shipping and handling fee) or something (????).
Similarly, those who don't have X-number of posts by a given cut-off date (like the coins) could order a standard Scrap Yard patch for a nominal (shipping and handling ???) fee at a certain number of posts. And similarly pay to upgrade for the JYD status patch if and when achieved at a later date - if not by a given cut-off date.
Just some thoughts.
... edit to add: so that would mean I vote Yes for ability to "purchase" patches. - Purchase if not enough posts and purchase extras for those who want extras.
.
...... 10K for the special edition ZOMBIE patch. No one is going to go from 500 to 10K posts in a couple weeks and the guys who already have 10K+ deserve it.
I think the "Zombie" posters with 10k+ deserve something special as well.
I post what seems like a LOT to me.... spend too much time actually IMO, and I am NOWHERE near 10k.
Surely, that deserves something.
