Hmm, a scrap yard version of the skeleton key or skeleton warden would rock! Actually, any warden for that matter! I figure either a warden or the SK will become my edge. Very capable, but small enough to be light and comfortable. Just have to start playing with the kydex and make something for them!

I don't have a skeleton key but I can say the skeleton warden fits my pocket nicely. It needs a svelte sheath to really capitalize on its inherent skinnyness so Kydex is probably a good choice.

A shaker would be better in D2 or ATS34 as it would most likely be a skinner or little chore knife- so sr77 would be toughness overkill but a corrosion problem. sr77 is nearly unbeatable for big knives that hit trees, Jeeps and other stuff in need of destruction, but for a skinner/utility it's weaker as chemical attack to the edge takes it off quicker than stainless... Ok it'd (sr77) probably take a better edge to start with but lose it to acidity/corrosion attack quicker.
Discuss..
(I have a DF and SS4 for the above reasons..)

Folks have used non-stainless pocket knives for a really, really long time. They hold their edge just fine. In my limited experience old carbon steel knives have often held their edges better than when they are new.
Acids and other chemicals cause them to develop a patina over time but if it's not a cooking knife so what? I think a patina makes a knife looked loved, but then I'm a knut!

Don't discount using some polish on them as well to help seal and protect them!

A patina over time just shows a well used knife, plus it helps protect the steel underneath (apparently..). My main thought is the actual edge metal that comprises the micro-serrations that actually do the cutting, get attacked rapidly taking the edge off the carbon steel quicker than stainless.. I like big sr77, I prefer my S6 over my SS4 for most things- but the SS4 is much less 'environmentally sensitive' than the S6.
I would never say that sr77 isn't the right steel for the yard or seek to undermine it- hell if I was upside down in a Jeep wreck I'd be glad my DF was within easy reach (bought the DF, one day I get the Jeep to strap it too!), but for a skinner/utility blade I'll take INFI or ATS34 (or even decent 440C) over sr77 every time. Just my 'English currency' 2 cents!
