Nice!!! The conversion is whats leaning me off of the stock saigas but i still want a S12. The forums say it's easy but then they toss in a few variables which is where i start to wonder about the DYIing thing. Still can't deny that it looks like a sweet piece to have if the zombies come a knocking. Also if you need to open something that just won't seem to open...
So how did you like doing the conversion and do you think it was worth it? And when i ask that I mean would you do it again? I ask because I know I could do it but it seems to be such a rainy day project that it means "one day" I'll get around to it. Or maybe ever...
Nice to see one done and hope you enjoy it.
My dad has been researching this conversion and gathering the parts for a few months now. He was pumped on doing the conversion and he "had some spare parts" so I was down.
The only real PITA's are the amount of dremel work in cutting the stock adapter and that darn pin retainer for the trigger group.
You need to remove a fair amount of aluminum from the standard ACE adapter. Also, I did not like the fact that there is only one bolt (on top) holding the stock adapter in to the receiver. I believe others just fill in the extra holes in the receiver or just leave them open. I did not like having one bolt so I drilled and tapped the adapter and put 4 screws in these "extra holes". If I had not done that piece, I could have saved about an hour and half of work, but I know that stock is solid.
You need to do some dremel work on the hammer as well although this is not too bad. I used a double hook trigger so I had to dremel on the reciever accordingly again this was not too bad but takes time.
Another pain in the neck was getting the pin retainer in to cature the pins that hold in the FCG. I first tried to mod a standard AK part and failed miserably. I then ordered the correct part and it took about 10 minutes. Oh well, one of those RTFM things.
I would do it again mainly because I enjoy this sort of stuff. We did my saiga, my dad's and we will be doing a friends soon as well.
If I had never done any rifle work, then I probably would not have attempted this.
