docsavage,
Andy's statement was considerate. the original statement was batoning? with no explanation but to mention car hoods. And was kind enough to share his opinion which is one of many good methods to get dry wood. I am mentioning this because I feel as Andy stated, he did not imply anything and was suggesting advice IF it was not known. You provide great feedback and no ill comment was made by Andy to either you or mugsy66.

...a small hatchet or camp axe...

Doc

So... a small hatchet or camp axe then.

Thanks for the info!

Hatchet or camp axe is fine- but so is the REG-DF and even knives like the SOD.I demolished several fatwood stumps toady and over the weekend and used my Reg just to be sure there was no problems. Kinda cool all the different names for fatwood as Doc stated above. Most of the guys here ( Oregon Coast) just call it" trophy pitch" . In this wet climate it is about the only thing that will get a fire going good. Thanks

Hatchet, camp axe or batoning...pretty much what you prefer to do. I went camping a few weeks ago and my friend brought his camp axe and we had to split some small to medium sized logs and make smaller kindling for fire starting...I tried the axe but batoning with my knife was way easier for cutting the wood and for getting the smaller starter pieces cut. My friend liked it so much that he asked me to leave my knife with him when I left so he could use it for the next night/day they were there. Apparently, he didn't care much for using the camp axe either. No bends or breaks in my knife either and still sharp afterwards. But, that's just my preference and only one example...You can chew through the wood like a beaver if you want to...To each his own.

I will say that survival books and forums talk about and teach batoning as a technique for fire starting, etc.- so there must be some merit to it.

Yep... my point exactly.... why is there a need from the "experts" to challenge other opinions...

Well that seals it for me... (some) books on survival.... Gimme a break...I think your above comment it states it all.. to each his own... you beat your knife through wood... its your knife... I choose not to...

Its the same garbage about what you would do if someone stuck a gun in your face...'What would you do?'.... Until you are in the actual situation, you can only speculate....

I have had someone put a gun in my face and tell me they were going to "blow my motherf***ing head off" ... I know what I did...

I have not been in a situation that I have had to beat my blade through something to live... but since I always have a hatchet or small camp axe... I guess I won't have to... but you never know....

Bring your bent or broken knife to my funeral and laugh....mine will be intact.. you can have it to beat through something else...

noone here claims to be an "expert" nor does anyone claim to have the "right way" to do things.

People share their experiences, based on what they have done.

He merely said there might be some merit, far different from saying that whatever those authors may have said were to be followed, i dont know about you but i take everything with a grain of salt, not face value.

That is exactly right, different strokes for different folks, you need to re-evaluate the way you're interpreting some things because it seems youre blowing it a little bit out of proportion.

You may very well carry around an axe for long humps but im sure there's many here that might disagree, and it is that reason why splitting wood with a knife (which has been done a million times over with Bussekin forver) is something that everyone expects to be able to do with a knife of this size.

I can say from firsthand experience that taking an axe into the everglades is alot of un-necessary weight (for me). My knife was able to accomplish all tasks i needed it to, including splitting a stump to get to the resin soaked center. and guess what, it took it without much issue, and still split atoms afterwards.

All I can say is if I brought a bent and broken Dog Father from batoning firewood to anyone I would expect them to bow by my feet, as I would be some kind of superman or cyborg with the strength of 5 gorillas.

Well I would say this thread is sufficiently derailed.

Folks, calm down, accept that others have different views and shockingly enough BOTH views can be correct.

There has been all together too much negativity in the Yard as of late.

Relax, grab a refreshing beverage of your choice and mellow out!
