http://news.sympatico.ctv.ca/abc/home/co...ath_natl_100304In a different article, they said he had matches, lighter, a knife, an axe, tarp, winter clothes and a few other items. How then did he die of hypothermia? When I teach courses I get weekend warrior city slicker types like this all the time. Difficult to deal with as they have read every book and know everything but have never done it. This is what happens. Hound

The fact is we don’t know exactly what happened. Barring accident or bad luck this was preventable on many levels.
A waste. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

Sad story, I never think putting yourself intentionally in a survival situation is a good idea. This is a prime example of why you shouldn't.

I understand wanting to test your survival skills...but couldn't he have done that in the woods outside of his or somebody else's house? I mean...nobody should WANT to be in a survivor situation. The whole point of having those skills is that if you ever need them because you're SCREWED...not to intentionally screw yourself and then need them.
That being said I bet he got wet and couldn't dry off properly. They said he was in a "marshy" area so I bet that was it.

"The temperature in the area dropped to -12C during the time that Code was missing."
and it was in the middle of a snow strom, and according to the article all he went out in was the clothes on his back, fishing line, and an axe. not to be too glib, but it sounds more like natural selection here.

Any way you look at it, this IS a sad story. He would probably still be alive if he had gone with a buddy and done better planning. This is a perfect example of why inexperienced folks should not try this on their own, even if he had a few trips under his belt. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Kind of like that UFC guy who went out into the desert with little water and intentionally ran his motorcycle out of gas. I am all for preparing, learning skills, and practicing, but I am not for intentionally putting oneself in a position where your life depends on perfect application of said skills. In my case at least, I am too much of a clutz to count on everything going perfectly. Murphy will rear his ugly head at exactly the wrong moment.

Food for thought,I'll bet he had the shakes so bad he couldn't function enough to use his tools. S.H.!
