Yeah. Personally I have never done any camping or hiking. But since I have started working at my present job, some of the guys that I talk to really make me want to start. I really want to learn, but I guess as with everything else, I have to crawl before I can walk. So I need to learn the basics. Are there any books or guides I can get that would help me get started?

There's a series of books, OD green covers (someone help me out, I can't for the life of me remember the name, Ranger something or other) that you can find in a PX/BX bookstore if you can get on base/post, or order online. If I could remember it, I'd just tell you what it is. OH boy.... this is gonna drive me nuts. There's all kinds of interesting tidbits for survival skills. I honestly didn't know you could use toilet paper in some of the manners described. And plastic bags are frickin' useful, beyond carrying things. Not the be all to end all, Practice is the only way to get good, but a good way to understand improvising in a nasty situation. I was good at making it up as I went, these booklets made me better.

Honestly, I'd rather have someone who's been there, done that, got the t-shirt and drank the 9$ beer afterwards to learn from though.

I think that is, although it doesn't look like the booklets are on the website, sooo...

"The Ranger Digest"
By Ranger Rick Tscherne

Ranger Rick is the kids animal magazine if I'm not mistaken (not that such is a bad read:) ).

As far as I read, the two guys were on the woods without any survival tools at all (no knife, no lighter, for not to say about a firesteel). Also they were not properly dressed. They just had their fireguns. Strange. I would like to know more about this sad story.
