Hunting rules are strict about what times you can hunt at up here. It is still extremely bright even at what is considered sunset now. I am hoping with the thaw this weekend they shed their white winter coats and get their brown one. Really funny to see them trying to hide on the snow in a brown coat! Not as funny as the pure white coats in the fall before the snow flies! They look day glow that time of the year!

Nice......I wish ours changed colors like that. Makes for an easier to see target.

Also makes hunting them impossible in the winter and summer. They blend in extremely well. Like trying to find a cotton ball in a snow drift in the winter and a clump of dead leaves in the summer.

lol, our cottontails can be like that here, and don't even think about trying to spot a grouse out here. There's a reason they just sit there and let you shoot em if you do happen to spot em, I've never seen anything blend like that.

Kraz, if you plan on going after squirrels make sure you have a good bunch of crap arrows on hand. There's nothing worse then letting go of a $6.00 arrow just to see it graze the critters back and soar into oblivion time after time, I speak from experience.

Thanks TBB, sounds like wise counsel from someone who has been there, done that. I will skip the carbon fiber and go straight for the bargain bin

A bow is on my short list of things to get. It's a toss up between a lever action in .30-30, or a compound bow. I'm leaning toward bow, but that may change.

very nice TradBow, I got a Mathews LX last year, and my girl got a Mathews FX mini max, both very nice! We've been getting used to them, no hunting yet.

I go rabbit hunting out in the desert at least once every two weeks. I've deer hunted a few seasons but haven't had any luck as of yet. But I've taken dozens of rabbits, some squirrels, and a few birds here and there.

What range huh....well it depends on the day. Generally I'm pretty accurate at 15 yards, fairly accurate at 20 yards and not so much at 30 but I get lucky out that far every once in awhile.

For instance last night I took my daughter out hiking and had a nice cottontail at about 30-35 yards. I drew back and nailed that sucker right in the vitals, he didn't even think about going anywhere. That was a pretty lucky shot for me though, about a 1 in 10.

A cotton tail at that distance with a traditional bow takes some real skill, luck or no luck

I was good out to 30 yards on deer size targets with my 50 lb. recurve.

When I moved up to the compound bow my groups tightened and my reach went beyond 50 yards. My best shot so far has been a coyote at 57 yards.

Its a great sport, good shooting.

Dan

I have a compound bow, I got a good deal on it, $5! I’ve read a lot of articals on making your own bow, I always thought that looked neat but haven’t tried it yet. Here’s some articles from Wilderness Way that you guys might like:

Hey thanx Dan, and thanx for those articles Andy, I've seen most of them but there's a few there that are new to me. Its a fun sport, like anything else the more you do it the better you get. The funny thing about Trad though is that the second you stop for awhile you almost have to relearn everything again. Its my passion though.

hahaha,
quite a diverse "list" you've got! LOL

well with the what was it? 10acres you're getting??
Go with the lever action!

I had a Winchester 94 Carbine .44 Mag in 16" barrel.. oh man that thing was SWEET! we live out in the boonies.. and that was my house gun. Easy handling, light, 10-rnd capacity, yet with enough punch & range to dispatch anything in my neighborhood. On MY list of 'things i Regret selling' !!
